Ok in case everyone is wondering what all my complaining about AT&T has been, here is a condensed version. One thing that has been apparent the last few years in my dealings with AT&T is that it is very easy to buy service but increasingly difficult to reduce service.

I had an office in a building that was recently sold so I had to move out (IN MAY!). I had 3 phone lines and dsl internet service. I moved to a location where I already had internet service so what I needed to do was to disconnect my internet , 2 phone lines and remote forward the main number to the new location. When I called in May, the remote forward of the main line was taken care of so all I needed was the disconnect of everything else. I placed an order for this to happen on May 31 as the closing on the building was in early June.

In mid June, I called my old numbers and realized they were still operating. I logged on to my old e-mail account and noticed it was still active too which more that likely means that the dsl is still connected.

Ever since then, I have been calling and trying to get this resolved. Every time I get a human and explain my situation, they say something like, "that's not my department, let me get you someone that can help." Then I get transferred to a robo system that doesn't solve the problem or I am put on hold for 15 or 20 minutes and then after waiting, the phone will disconnect. I am still getting bills for the old service too which I refuse to pay and eventually that will get it disconnected but of course the problem is that people have moved into the old building and can use my service as well as a bad credit mark for this. Another weird thing is that every time I get transferred to a department that handles disconnects, the volume is very low and I can barely hear anything. Again, if I want to add service, the volume is perfectly fine, you want to reduce service you can't hear them. But the bottom line is that I have live service in a building I'm not in and I can't get it disconnected. Bizarre, eh? I have spent many hours over the past month trying to get this resolved and I'm no closer to it today than I was a month ago.

Time to escalate. If I were you, I'd sent a certified letter to corporate detailing what you've done, the extra money you've spent, and how exactly you expect to be compensated (immediate repair of the problem plus compensation for all the extra money you've paid after trying to cancel sounds fair to me). I've little patience for this sort of corporate-sponsored malfeasance myself and understand your frustration. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum. Fight the good fight.

I finally got a response from AT&T. I sent some e-mails to a couple of different e-mails addresses and I got this back

Thank you for your online inquiry. Your request has been received and is being researched by a Small Business Specialist. Please do not send a duplicate request or call customer service for assistance regarding this same inquiry as this may delay our reply to you. You will receive a return email detailing a resolution to your concern.
So basically, "Don't call us, we'll call you" but at least it's something. My expectations are pretty low when that sounds like a good response.

What ticked me off is my work-- I love my job we are part of a organisation that gives free, unbiased, practical, support to anyone in the community. I love my job as you don't know what your next client's problem is. I love helping people with filling in forms to claim for benefits or help if they need it. I have helped clients get DLA mobility payments for real problems they have. We help people who are in debt we talk to company's and after stating the case to the company we can get company's to except a few pounds payments every week. However I hate some of the clients that come in and think they are "owed" these benefits without doing a days work. Some members of the public are just pure lazy and just don't want to work they just tell you excuses after excuses.

I am a single mother with two children one of which has a disability and I could not work for five years or so. However I have always worked voluntarily or helped support groups when I could not work. I worked hard in my company and now I have a part time job there now my boys are older. I worked my way up when I could. It was blinking hard work but look where I am. Yet there are younger more able people ,very able to work but lie to get benefits and we have to fill in the forms with the information they provide me with if they say they can't walk 200 meters ( even though they just walked up the path to get in without any problems) we have to put that in the form!!!!! ***

Anyway that's my moan for the day.

My dad had a similar incident with AT&T concerning a cell phone. After four months of arguing on the phone and sending e-mails, someone finally told him that they refused to disconnect the service until they received a written request. So he sent them a nasty letter (snail mail) and finally got the phone service disconnected. This was the beginning of last year sometime. I believe he is still arguing over the bill with them, though.
I hope you get this all straightened out soon! Good luck!

And unfortunately those people who are trying to game the system make it harder for people who legitimately need the help. The perception among many is that ALL who collect welfare are lazy slackers who just don't want to work and they want to throw out the whole system rather than trying to address the problems with it that allow abusers to receive benefits when they are capable of fending for themselves.

I have to go fight with a grocery store manager today.

Yesterday my husband bought four individually wrapped baked pie thingies. He opened one, made a face, and double checked the Best Before date. It's dated late July 2012 (I don't remember the exact date). But, it was a sticker. He pulled back the sticker, and the original date on the box is mid-June.

What a slimey trick to pull.

Totally agree. I used to work a Title XX child care center and watched many receive free child care yet drive up in expensive cars, clothes, jewelry. Yet hard working mom's just over the set help limits paid full price.
