Margaret Atwood: best dystopian fiction writer out there right now

    And in no particular order:
    Chuck Palahniuk
    Christopher Moore
Jeffrey Eugenides (Middlesex may be my favorite novel of all time, sorry SK)
    L. Frank Baum
    Roald Dahl
    Joe Hill (novels)
    Ray Bradbury

Correction: For Joe Hill, I recommend his novels AND short story collection, 20th Century Ghosts. Not really into his comic books though.

Other than the hairy toes thing I think I'd be an awesome hobbit...I'd fit in a hobbit hole I enjoy lotsa food and a good ale (or 3). I have second breakfast all the time! Maybe I could just buy all the books everyone here has mentioned and some fuzzy slippers and sneak off to middle earth....

This is a good book! I read it when it was first published here in the States. I think it won alot of awards in Europe?

I don't know if Perfume won awards in Europe, but it sure got translated into enough languages to beat the band. Süßkind's play Der Kontrabaß won the German equivalent to a Pulitzer Prize. Don't bother with the movie version of Perfume, though - it sucked. There's no way to effectively transfer the novel's verbiage and the protagonist's motives to 70 mm celluloid.
