I consider myself to be a fairly reasonable and open minded person....
.....the first time, I could overlook, but after I informed him that I am a girl and didn't like being called 'bro'.....he purposely referred to me in that manner again, and I took it as a personal barb. I feel that it was a personal insult directed at me.
Well, it wasn't. It was more like your little brother saying "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!" Childish, certainly; irritating, probably. But no insult.
