I wish I had had someone prepare me for setting off on this journey by telling me, "This series does not take place in our world, precisely. Keep an open mind and you'll be fine." Now that I've completed the series, I've gotten no less than a dozen people hooked. I fancy myself a Dark Tower promotor of sorts - I check in with them, make sure they're still reading, and if they're not, why they stopped. At some point, be it in the first book or later in the series, your mind will snap around the concept and /that's/ when you really get to enjoy the world Sai King created. Stick with it, unbuckle your seatbelt, and remember - anything is possible, especially in Mid World ; ) Posted By: Will January 26th, 2013 8:03:46 pm EST I am friends with hundreds of readers and professional writers and I yet to find one of them that has anything good to say about the Dark Tower series. As a freelance writer of some merit it's very frustrating that I can't even get an agent to look at a horror novel I completed a couple years ago that is a better read than any of the Tower books. I own over a hundred pounds of Stephen's hardbacks and I am in awe of many of them that I consider great. However, if I were King I'd be embarrased to put my name on any of the Tower Series books. Roland, Eddie, Susana, Jake, Oy, these characters will live on in your heart long after you finish this epic. Start this book and I promise you will devour it and all books after. Instantly hooked and now a Constant Reader. Since completing the series I have started the audiobooks. Frank Muller is AMAZING. It's a tragedy he'll never narrate again... I'll always love this story and Roland. Little Sisters is a great tale, and WttK is excellent as well. Fun to read, always leaves me wanting more. I need more of these adventures of the last Gunslinger. Final note: For the love of God, Gan or the Jesus-Man, PLEASE don't cast Russell Crowe as Roland. In my humble opinion, it would disgrace the character and hence the movie/story as well (this is based off rumors). The artwork was done best by this artist in the first and seventh book of the series, perfectly capturing a glimpse of the idea and puting it into a work of art. I fell into SK again after putting aside while I raised my children. Found him again in Duma Key (love Wireman) and Lisey's Story, I cried and grew up to love. Hooked again! I love them. When you reach the last pages of the last book, your stomach is churning because you want to know what happens, but, at the same time, you want to read slowly, so it doesn't end. This is the only Stephen King book that has made me cry. It makes you feel; I can't give it a better compliment than that. I recommend this series to all of my friends, and I would recommend it to any of you as well. A great read! Jake and his story has become one of the best written characters I have ever read about in a story, and the one thing that really bothers me is that I don't own the next book, and I want to read on so bad! Posted By: Smrobs December 16th, 2010 3:09:12 am EST I have been a SK reader for many years but I just discovered this series a couple of years ago when I found "The Drawing Of The Three" in a box in the attic. I read it and, while it was good, it didn't really light a fire like many of his others. Little did I know it was because I was coming in late in the series. I bought all the others and started reading and I was completely drawn in by page 3 of Gunslinger. I read avidly in every moment of my down time until I finished the series and will soon be reading it again. Right now, I am working my way through all his other books with ties to this series and I understand more and more with each one that I read. I would give my left foot, my right arm, and my firstborn child to see this series go the way of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, with very well made movies. It was entertaining and I can see how it would appeal to the Tolkien crowd, but for many fans of King and the suspense/thriller/horror genre, this series won't inspire. It, just like all of King's novels, is very well written and I will continue to sing his praises, just not for this series in particular. I had the Dark Tower series collecting dust in my closet for about five years, so I decided to start reading them. The opener of this series reads like a Fantasy Western: a gunslinger is the closet thing to a cowboy in the End World parallel universe. He's basically the epitome of a gunslinging twinner cowboy, looking for a man in black, as the synopsis say. It's an interesting tale, a little slow at first, then picks up toward the end of Roland's time in Tull. A great read for Stephen King fans. Most definitely an interesting concept, Roland is a knight but instead of a medieval setting, the story takes place in the post-apocalyptic West. Not our "West", but one that existed in a world that mirrors our own. Also instead of swords, he uses guns. Can't wait to start The Drawing of the Three! In my opinion the Dark Tower series is the pinnacle of Stephen King's career. I love all Stephen King novels. At that time I finished it and put it away as too confusing as the storystarts abrutly and ends nowhere. Later after many years I got hold of Wizard and Glass and started remembering ts and arts of the Gunslinger. W&G was a mind opener and after reading Gunslinger from my collection once again I could not wait to get my hands on the remaining series. I got Wastelands and Drawing of the Three at seperate times and the last three are simply not available anywhere inPakistan (whereI live) I have read these four arts many times over now and hate to put them down each time. U can imagine my frustration of not being able to go ahead with the story till the end!!!!!! IT was an awesome novel, but he movie left much to be desired because they cut too much out of it. Simply and truly the deepest and most complete fictional universe ever written (in my humble opinion). Offers an uncomparable insight into almost all of Mr. Kings other work. To fully appreciate the DT you will have to have read most of King's other work, but to fully appreciate his other novels you will have to have read the DT! The DT completes his work without finalizing it. Truly worth reading and rereading (5 times for me, two in Danish, once in the original language and twice in varoius original audio book versions).
