It's my personal favourite. For the most part it agonizing but the ending is great, very heartwarming especially in the movie where it is explicitly shown the happy ending implied at the ending of the book and so the movie became my favorite of all time and also my movie-junkie friend (who has watched every single movie you can name-since 1998 at least) says her favorite too although it wasn't quite the 'hit' when it was first released the strange thing is when she tried reading the booked (after some insistence on my part) she wouldn't finish it and told me it was boring her "because it didn't have enough dialogue" I personally think nobody should mind that in a book, though. I think she's just a movie person who doesn't read much. All in all, great book. Must read (and when I say that I mean it!). The actually story is pretty short ( a little over 100 pages) so you might want to borrow it from the library unlike me. But the book has three more stories you might want to read and you might like to read the story again if you're the type of person who likes to.

Can I just tell ya'll (new orleans here) that I read different seasons the year it came out, but when the Shawshank Redemption firt showed on DVD, I knew it was familiar but did not immedialtely recognize it. It (the movie) can be seen, it seems, at one time or another on a variety of cable channels. I am grateful for this as I've read again S.K. novella of "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." and recognize quotes and speech patterns developed by S.K. in the original version. This will always be an endearing story with many life long lessons to explore.

At the risk of being skewered on here.....was he raped or not? I have seen the movie over 30 times (at least) and read the original novella but dont remember it being explicit.
