Ray and Mary Burkett's marriage is one of near constant bickering. During a trip to buy a present for her niece, Mary goes into the store while Ray and their dog wait in the car. Ray is called into the store when Mary has a heart attack and ultimately dies. When Ray returns to the car, he finds their dog has also died. The story is told in third person and the reader learns about Ray's true character through his thoughts.
