Been years since I read Weaveworld. My question is how can it be badly researched if it's a fantasy novel, one that is made up by the author? I'm not criticizing you, just curious about your opinion. I thought it was a pretty good book, but I also don't read alot of fantasy or sci-fi either.
No biggie :) It's not the fantasy element, it's that the characters don't speak like Americans, especially lower income Americans (in the US setting), he had his info on Mormon religious hierarchy wrong, and his RL settings weren't accurate. Stuff like that shakes me right out of the story. Just my personal bias :)

Yea, come to think of it, the characters did speak with a lean towards modern day British speak, eh?

Exactly. He had a Chicago street kid speaking like an Oxford don. I rarely get bothered by details (like Glock safeties--lol), but characterization is big for me, and a big part of why I have absolute adoration for SK.
Funny you say that, because I have always felt the exact opposite. I love SK and have read him since Carrie was first published in paperback, but I think so many of his characters have the exact same voice and it always bothers me at first when I am reading a new book, story, etc. of his for the first time. The snappy answers, the euphemisms, the idioms, the repeated sayings, etc. I have always found his strongest point to be the way he handles the sense of time and place in his stories and how he can always tap into the zeitgeist of the time he is writing about, no matter what era.

I am reading Scherzo: Murder and Mystery in 18th Century Venice by Jim Williams.
I like it so far . . .

I had to put this one aside because it was strongly suggested that I read, Breaking Twig by Deborah Epperson and I can not put this book down. It's set in the South and to me it's a great read. A little slow at the begininng but then it's snatches you! Over 100 thousand downloads for this tale.

I am finally going to finish The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving tonight! I am not sure how I feel about this novel yet. I have read a few of his other books and enjoyed them (loved A Prayer For Owen Meany!) and even though Hotel New Hampshire has his great prose and sly humor, I just wasn't prepared for (I can't find the spoiler tags HELP!!!!) the
incest
part of the book.

The Darkside of the Moon (England really)
A lot of people on here seem to not be reading Stephen king. Anyway, I am, I have started joyland.

Winter, how are you finding 11/22/63? I'm from England, hate anything to do with our politics let alone any other countries, it all bores the pants off me, but that is a wonderful book, I've read it twice and it would be my favourite if it weren't for a certain demented clown monster terrorising kids in the 50s.

Currently rereading Huckleberry Finn. It's my favorite book but it's been well over a decade since I last read it. It's still as awesome as I remember. After that I plan on reading book two in the 'A Song of Fire and Ice' series (aka Game of Thrones). I am tempted to read ahead of the TV series, but I haven't made up my mind.

As for Stephen King, I am intrigued by 'Under the Dome'. I didn't watch the TV series, so I might give it a try soon. I might read Joyland before the end of the year since it's a short book.

I have been working my way thru Shivers VII, which has King's Weeds in it. I read that story first! I have to say that it doesn't read like a usual King story, like he was trying for some of them 'big word' type of stories? It doesn't flow quite like it should, but I did enjoy it! Nice to visit with Ol' Jordy again!

I just purchased two e-books. Dean Koontz "Wilderness" and Kathy Reichs "Bones in Her Pocket" for my Kobo. Looking forward to starting those after the current book I'm reading which is called "Precious Blood" by Jonathan Hayes. It's about a forensic pathologist...the usual stuff. I'm about halfway through, but still not sure if he will be on my great books list. Right now I'm kind of struggling through but I gotta finish it just to see how it ends.

It was okay but I couldn't seem to really get into it. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on goodreads. I only picked up the book because I liked watching the Hellraiser series and it was the only book of his there. I read it was his first book though so maybe in the future I'll read another one of his to see if I'll like it better.
I've tried to get into Barker's books for years but the only one I've ever been able to complete was "Cabal" which was very good. The movie "Nightbreed" was based on Cabal if I remember correctly. I got about half way thru Weaveworld three or four times but I've never been able to finish it. One of the weirdest book plots I've ever read......
