Thanks. Didn't get much of an explanation in the version that we got in sweden. So of course you got a bit confused. But i get the idea. Still don't think it is a really good idea, though. ;-D
I know what you mean. He'd had me type a bit of Desperation and then the first few pages of The Regulators a while after that and I thought he'd given me the wrong ones to type. Was scratching my head thinking these are the same people but he explained it when I asked if I he'd given me the wrong manuscript pages. ;-D

I just realized what my dream job would be: (I am a medical transcriptionist)

- to listen to Steve's voice coming out of my computer, through my headset all day long - oh my - that sounds SO much better than listening to doctors and residents.

(some of them slaughter the English language unfortunately so I am always correcting).

He's dictated letters while I took them down in shorthand but never dictated a book. What I get when he wants me to type something for a book are his handwritten pages because he was somewhere without his laptop and felt the urge to get something down. It's been quite a few years since I've had to do that, though. Had spent many a time earlier in my work career transcribing tapes for bankers and lawyers to feel your pain. ;-D

How long have you been there? Gosh - there should be a pension plan for working for such a long time! (the BEST job in the world) - we are all jealous :)

Briefly I considered getting my transcriptionist's license, but reconsidered when I remembered trying to read and transcribe some doctors' orders, realizing that verbal orders can be at least as mystifying. I was seeing a lady for a while who was in transcriptionist school, who shared with me a few recordings of doctors' orders, and I decided I'm not brave enough.

I've been doing it for eight years and believe me - I am looking forward to retirement in three years time!

First worked on assignment for a month as a Kelly Girl temp in 1986 and then came to work for him in November 1988 and yes, lots of benefits along with the salary including a pension plan which I hope to make use of in 3 years and 10 months, but who's counting?

36 months for me! (but like you said - who's counting?)
Let's not forget that cool European tour recently, however that was a "working holiday" :tickled_pink:

I enjoyed it and the Regulators both. I loved the into and meeting Collie. The line that always stuck with me and creeped me out a lot was when the guy in the jail cell is talking about Collie and he says, "He's bigger now." Something about that always gave me the chills.

I also really dug the part about the Gold Mine. Just a very creepy setting. Every single time I think of that part, I think of the Doors lyric in song The End, when Jim Morrison says, "Weird scenes inside the Gold Mine". Even before I read Desperation that line always gave me a strange feeling for some reason....very eerie. After I read the book it strikes me as even freakier.

raised in an academic world ??

ah, yes...education...spelling, grammar 'n the like...hmmmm...i can now see that this is true, my erudite friend...so sorry to have erred, if but only on the side of caution...

but i was amiss...you posed some querries back in good ol' #13...so, if i may...

"why do they have to be so different...doesn't make sense...give the character another name...it is a totally different character"

well...not so quick...maybe in some cases, yes...but not necessarily in all...

in this case, this is a world that belongs to a particular writer and he gets to make the rules up, being fiction, as he sees fit...

there are no laws on this sort of thing, just as there are no laws on exactly what, say, a werewolf looks like...king himself has had several different variation of just that critter...so, who knows...

i'm not entirely sure that ever character we've ever come across in the different parrallel worlds have always had the exact same characteristics...

besides...it keeps coming back to that ultimate caveat: this is fiction...the rules can be, and quite often are, made up as we go along...so, relax and enjoy the ride !

"you have to be able to recognize something..."

ah...sort of, but no, not really...

have you ever watched star trek ? they've had quite a few parrallel stories...sometimes, there is but a shade of a semblance to the charcteristsics of the character we know and love...and that sort of thing appears throughout each of these two books, even if it is something as simple as a name...

but just like in those classic ST episodes, it then veers wherever the authors mind decides to twist and turn...see, that is the fun of it

look at it this way: if every roller coaster followed 'the rules' they'd all be the same...and, well...kinda boring: it's the unexpected twist that brings new joy

again, enjoy the ride as it is...not the expecation you've created

and lastly...you have not, if i may so boldly offer, gone bananas...strawberries, maybe...but certainly not bananas

trust me...i know bananas...i'm intimate with bananas..............wait, that didn't sound right...is there an edit key...
^ = awesome!

Thanks for a good laugh. My not so erudite hat is off.

Oh, yes, I quite enjoyed Desperation too.

Looks like Spidey got a hold of a copy of this book too!

(I have yet to read it and I do not own it) :a11: I took it out of the library once but returned it unread.

So this book is on my list of "yet to obtain" but I am still looking for it at thrift stores in my area.

Hang in there Nessy, I found the exact hard copy of desperation shown in your spider man image at Value Village for $1.50.

You shop at Value Village? I just went there this past Saturday and got quite a haul of SK books - hardcover and softcover, and almost all were first editions.
I spent about 50 bucks but it was well worth it!
(We have a deal where if you buy five books, the fifth one is free!)
:congratulatory:
I still have not lucked into any with signatures yet but I am keeping my hopes up :monkey:

Oh yea, the one in Mount Vernon, WA by where I live. I hate spending money and my wife and I have become quite the thrift store shoppers. With her talents at the sewing machine she can up cycle pretty much anything. The books I find there are the real jem as far as im concerned.
