Wasp27 - I have to agree - I am happy that you get joy out of this movie - it's all good (to use my son's expression!) I do not want to add fuel to the fire so I am not taking sides here, I just think it is so good when a book or a movie inspires someone and makes them happy - and I am sure Mr. King is pleased about it as well!
:applause: :encouragement:
About Shawshank I actually think, perhaps it is blasphemous to think so here?, that the movie is better than Kings original story. For me personally i have always thought that the best adaptions of his work have been of stories that doesn't have to much of the supernatural in them if anything at all. Dolores Claiburne, Misery, The Green mile and Stand by me are together with Shawshank my fovorites. The only other one that can enter the list is Carrie and i guess she is the exception to prove the rule. And when i mention Carrie i mean the movie with Sissy Spacek And Piper Laurie in the leads. Travolta did a good job in the role as the bad boy. King has a way with words that makes you believe the thing he writes, at least so long your'e reading. When you see a movie that illusion becomes harder to uphold and that is why i think i like these movies better than say the adaptions of IT or the Mist or some other story. But thats just me. I'm sure other doesn't have this problem.

Loved the Shawshank movie. As others have said, it's the one that anytime it comes on, at any place in the story, I can stop the surfing and enjoy it. (The Green Mile and Bourne movies are that way for me too.)

I don't know that I'd say it's the best movie adaptation ever, but it's right at the top, and it's the best movie adaptation of a King story.

Hey folks, I've been MIA recently...busy busy around here... But I have a second to sit down on my butt so let me just say I consider Shawshank to be the best adaptation of a previously written work because it's the one film that having read the story, you're like "YES!!!!" The second you hear/see Morgan freeman. The essence of kings story for me, is Red. Backed by a beautiful score that touches the heart and captivating cinematography, the film takes what was a great, quiet and humble short story and transformed it (though not intentionally- remember, this film gained a cult status over the years and after it's release on tape) into a symbol for the people who were touched by it. I think the reason it's so loved is probably for the most simplest of reasons- it makes you smile.

It's great that there is a place where I can talk to others about all things King, there aren't many people friends or family who I can have a real, in depth discussion about his work/films based on his work with. One thing my hubby and I agree on though is that The Shawshank Redemption is one of our favorite movies, ever. Definitely MY favorite. I'm not even trying to be biased, but I can honestly say, King related or not, this film is in my opinion, the only flawless film I have ever seen. It is perfect.
The casting- Morgan Freeman..I mean the man could read the damn phone book and it would be pleasurable to listen to.
Tim Robbins- another fine actor, epitomized Andy, and if you don't think so, you're crazy!
Clancy Brown- I just love him haha, and the fact that he is the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob just makes it that much better lol
Everyone cast in the film was just spot on, ya know? And it is truly the only film adaptation that mirrored the original story to a t..The story is only about 100 pages give or take and the film managed to sustain and breathe life into Kings words like no other film adaptation has ever done. Along with the cinematography and soundtrack, it makes for a beautiful work of art.
This is my family's favorite film for sure, and as a person who needs film and literature to live, I'm grateful that such a gem exists. Yes, I cry everytime at the end, and will never get tired of watching it. Thank you Mr. King for writing such moving, beautiful story that speaks to the human condition.
It's probably the best, but the Green Mile comes very close.
