Cosmos- A Space time Odyssey

For those who enjoyed and loved Carl Sagan's Cosmos- A Person Voyage, a sequel will begin on Fox network soon.

After launching the ambitious “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” on its Fox broadcast network and Nat Geo cable outlet in the U.S., on March 9 and March 10, respectively, the media conglomerate intends to use 90 different Nat Geo outlets and 120 Fox-related networks around the world to launch the series globally – the first time the company has used the combined reach of two different networks to accomplish the task.

the Fox network announced that it has ordered a 13-episode series, “Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey". As part of a creative team that includes Ann Druyan, Sagan’s widow and a collaborator on the original “Cosmos,” one of the executive producers is Seth MacFarlane, the creator, producer, co-star and animating spirit of “Family Guy,” the bawdy and irreverent Fox cartoon sitcom.

Just finished watching the first episode. Highly recommend it. It will repeat tomorrow, Monday on the National Geographic TV station.
Sagan truly passed the touch to Neil deGrasse Tyson. Teacher to student, student who now becomes the teacher. Give it a try!!

I recorded it too. There were three shows I wanted to watch on at the same time... which is more uncommon than a supernova. So, I dvr'd Walking Dead and Cosmos and watched Resurrection.

Okay, we've watched them all so far, even one time when I was out of town, and we got on the phone to coordinate so we could watch it "together."

A little put off by the first one. I thought the Bruno reference was important, but they carried it on too far. Rather than making their point with a hammer tap, they used a sledgehammer on a tack. It was too distracting.

But I really loved the poignant memory of Sagan that Tyson brought out at the end.

And we've watched it since, and it's been wonderful. Our knowledge has expanded since Sagan's first series, which we also watched, and the show is keeping up, and doing so coherently, understandably, and completely within the approach and the spirit of the original.

They got marked down on Bruno at the start, but they've come back to establish their scores to bring it to a solid A.

Update.

We watched it tonight. Engrossing once again, and they tied up the connections nicely.

Being a veteran of the first series when it first came out, and yes I'm that old, I have to note:

I think Neil deGrasse Tyson is a better narrator than Carl Sagan. Not to take away from Sagan. The series would not have existed without him, pure and simple. He gets the nod for doing it, for being the voice that people would listen to in order to get this started.

But where Sagan was professorial, Tyson is approachable. Where Sagan was nasally and lecturing, Tyson is deep-toned and your really smart neighbor who's letting you in on it all.

This is a great series. It's meeting or exceeding my expectations, and my expectations were pretty high from Sagan's presentation.

Sagan opened the door to the Cosmos, and Tyson stepped through it. The torch has been passed-- teacher to student.
As TV technology improved, so did the series. Cosmos has come from professor lecturing a classroom of new students, to a teacher sitting around a campfire with with his students. I am hooked on the new Cosmos.

We actually liked the series so much we bought the book when it came out. In hardback.

I'm hoping one comes out after this series. It'll be something to share with the grandkids.

Not the best one this week, and by that I mean it was my least favorite. It was an interesting story, sure, and the protagonist of it is to be admired, but it was pretty much a one-issue story. And in the realm of "the cosmos," which is a pretty big realm, it could've been covered in 15 or 20 minutes and left the rest of the show exploring other things.

It's still running a high batting average, but I'm looking forward to the next one on deck.

Agree, Grandpa. I actually got up for a cup of tea. Just didn't hold me. Promises for a better episode next well. All series are allowed a slow episode.

Well, if you like stars, tonight was the night. We learned about the startling and definitive role that a few women had to play in the classification and analysis of stars that carry on to this day, as well as different views of constellations of different cultures, and the birth, life, and evolution of the myriads of types of stars in the universe.

After a bit of a downer last week, tonight was just pretty darn good.

Not one of their stellar (nyuk!) episodes, but a good and informative one on extinction events and the progress of our planet over the course of, what, some 250 million years. Some will roll their eyes at the carbon references in the latter part of the show, but I'm not one of them. And surprise yet again, hearing this from a Fox-sponsored show. I'm not complaining, just commenting.

It was solid. I haven't really looked to see how long this run is, and the end of this episode had a ring of finality to it. I was glad to see that there are still four episodes left.

I think those of us that watched the original Cosmos have a different feel for the new series. It still holds my attention, but does lack something the original had. Maybe is was that the original was in a less techno time- today everything is available at an instant.
Am eager to see the remaining episodes and how they end the series. Possible science spin offs??
