Finished Mr. Mercedes. Great story. I'm gonna get a little pause from King now. I'm going on with an alternate history story called Hitlers war by Harry Turtledove. Do you believe that name? It got to be a pseudonym or something. It was recommended to me by my brother. It's premise is that that britain and France didn't turn tail when Hitler invaded chechoslovakia in 1938 but declared war then instead of one year later when Hitler was more prepared. The war takes another direction because of it. Just a little tease.

Reading Mr. Mercedes still. I've been taking this one a little bit slower to make it last, but I think i'll be up all night tonight finishing it. It feels like it would flow better for me if I would have read it all the way through like some did. This doesn't feel like a story I can take plenty of breaks from, but I find a lot of crime related stuff to be that way, lol.

Since I usually read a couple authors at a time, I'm debating between starting either Swan Song or No Country For Old Men.. Swan Song seems like it may have tons of characters to keep up with, so maybe I ought to read that one alone..

I don't think it's a non-de-plume. I've seen his name for quite a number of years and have never heard that it's a fake name. I could be wrong tho....

I love these UK covers! Wish I could get them all in hardbacks. I have DT VII in hardback but have been unable to find the rest. Sigh......
I didn't know you could get that style in hard back. My 1-7 are paper backs, I love how the spine is the same as the front. I just wish my volume 7 was smaller.

Ah a pink floyd fan. Initally, with you saying underneath your avatar, i thought you were A James Herbert Fan. (he will be sadly missed) He had a book called Moon. But if i remember the Stand I think it is tom Cullen who says that.

Know where you're coming from as I also loved the first three UK Sphere Paperback volumes, but then the format changed when the UK publication switched to Hodder & Stoughton.

Oh! OK then. It was just my gut reaction when i heard the name. Turtledove. I imagined a dove sitting and cooing just over two lovers heads. But then he doesn't seem to write romances so it was perhaps a conclusion that wasn't fully logical. Difficult to forget anyhow...

Ha ha, yeah, Tom Cullen says M-O-O-N spells everything. I love the floyd, and I have a few James Herbert books (not Moon though) but haven't read them yet, my Sister loved him though.

One of my favorite Iles books is Turning Angel. And even though I've read most of his books and really enjoyed them, Spandau Phoenix I couldn't get into. Started it briefly and put it aside for another time. Blood Memory is another I like.
Thanks, Danie, I'll keep these two in mind for follow-up. I also had a bit of difficulty with "Spandau Phoenix". Lots of different leads and characters in the beginning, and at times the story was a bit hard to stay with. It got easier, though, so maybe you'll have better luck with it later on!

I finished "Swamplandia!" , by Karen Russell, tonight. I liked the book, and the writing, but my, what a sad story. I kept thinking when I finished that even though it had a "happy ending", of sorts, it didn't feel much like a happy ending. This book was like a swamp, from beginning to end...deep and yucky and dangerous and mysterious, but also beautiful and wondrous.

Is anyone on the board a fan of Terry Goodkind? A friend recently let me borrow the dvds of the tv series Legend of the Seeker, which was based on Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I really liked the show but it was canceled after two seasons and I had to have more so I bought the first book in the series, Wizard's First Rule, and started reading it the other day. I love Goodkind's writing and characters and his descriptive passages create an atmosphere that just pull you right into the story. It has most of the things I like in a fantasy story, but it is a lot grittier than a lot of stuff in the genre and feels more real.

I finished Dark Sister by Graham Joyce. A quietly creepy story and Joyce is soo good at portraying the family dynamic in all his work. Still visiting Imajica, by Clive Barker and about a hundred pages into Mr Mercedes. I don't recall King writing in this kind of narrative voice before. It really keeps you in the moment.

I have absoutely no self control. Not only bought Mr. Mercedes yesterday, i was up until a ridiculous hour finishing it. *sigh* Someday maybe I'll learn the fine art of making a King book last...
I always savour my King reads. But then life has kept me busy lately, so this time it's out of necessity. :)
