A friend of mine loaned me the DVD of this remake of "Maniac" with Elijah Wood in it. It's not for the squeamish, pretty brutal violence against women so if your in any way the kind of person who gets "Offended" by movies you should steer clear of it. But as for the movie itself, it's very well made. They did the whole film shot through the eyes of the killer, so when he's killing somebody your seeing it from the first person perspective, the only times you really even see Elijah Wood is when you catch his reflection in the mirror or in a picture frame outside of a couple scenes, his performance is primarily voice over work.

Many horror flicks will claim to be "Disturbing" or "Shocking" but most are just rehashed and overplayed genre staples. The method they shot this in makes it unique, so if your a fan of Slasher flicks or Psychological horror this will probably be something you should check out, as it stands out from the pack. One of the only remakes I think is way better then the original.
I liked that one, too. Wood is scary, but sort of sympathetic, too. That usually ruins horror movies for me (feeling sorry for someone usually rules out being really scared of them), but the director's touch was not heavy handed, and it helped to maintain the menace of the character.

I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which I never HAD seen. I also finished watching Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.
Half the movies made me cry really bad and nearly break down into the memory that was brought forth from 2 of the movies. I lost a relative to violent death, that's all.

in the Heat of the Night. Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier. I knew enough about this movie just through pop culture, but had never sat and watched the whole thing. Pretty good and Sidney and rod do an excellent job. The actor who slaps Sidney in a scene and Sidney slaps him back--he did not know that Sidney was going to slap him back, that was an honest added moment as Sidney didn't believe his character would just take a slap from a white man.

dawn of the planet of the apes....

not gonna jump on the 'it's the best apes movie ever' bandwagon...not even gonna go so far and say it's better than 'rise...'

but it is at least that (first ?) very fine films equal...if 'rise...' was a bit of a warped remake of 'conquest...' than this is a bit of a quasi remake of 'battle...'

i had some issues with the storytelling, especially as to Koba (URKO !) and the...umm...quickness of his turning considering the devastation it wrings upon both communities...wish they'd spent just a bit more there to show a more fully defined arc...

and the reaction by a rather hefty percentage of the ceasar led colony was a bit too easy because of that rather quick jump...

and that last battle ???

...way too 3D orientated for my liking...and ceasars reaction to all of this was quite unexpected and just didn't ring true: a bit too easily fatalistic...still, these are minor quibbles...for the momnet , it's my favorite big-tent film of the summer by far...

I* liked the movie, too. Have you read the book? Totally different, but even better.
Yes, I read the book a year ago or so at least. It was before they even announced the movie being made. I wasn't that impressed with it as alot of other folks are. I wasn't expecting what it turned out to be, I thought it was going to be a full-fledged novel, not just short glimpses into what happened to so many people. Interesting concept tho. I imagine there will be a sequel, which needn't star Brad Pitt. There's so many other stories that can be told from the book.

I watched the first half of The Lone Ranger with LilMan. It was silly and cheesy, but not as bad as I'd heard. It did make me laugh a few times. What the heck was up with Armie Hammer's teeth, though? They were whiter than Tonto's face--every time he smiled, it made him look like he had too many teeth, like a vampire or werewolf. Creepy.

I watched Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the attempt to re-boot the Tom Clancy series. It was a pretty good movie. Good cast, with Chris Pine, Keira Knightly, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh. Overall I enjoyed it, but to me it didn't really have that Tom Clancy "feel" to it. Not surprising, I guess, since the story was a pure Hollywood invention.

Just got home from watching Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. I'll give it a thumbs up. Pretty good movie, if you're looking for something to see during a hot day. I like how things are set up for the Battle, which will be the sequel. Great FX throughout. Ran just a tad bit long tho. But maybe that was due to the 11, yes, 11 previews that they showed before the feature (and I don't remember any of them!). What's up with that?
