....it was half a fingernail - you know, ripping off half a fingernail isn't much fun but, having got to that point, you might as well rip the other half off. You know from bitter experience you aren't going to enjoy it, but at least it finishes things off...

This sums it up perfectly. I haven't read the books and surprisingly my husband suggested we watch the first movie. We both felt about the same as you, but we kept on thinking, it has to get better (plus if you have a few beers before and during, it perks it up a bit! LOL) We rather liked the 3rd film as well, but haven't gotten around to 4 and 5. Based on this review, I'll try to convince him we can skip 4 and just finish it off with the final.
