I teach 5th grade CCD (religious education) at my church :)

I had religion as a school subject and later for two years confirmation classes prior to my confirmation.
Confirmation classes were tuesdays for 90 minutes and we had to go to church for at least 26 times a year I think.
You could skip every second one.
Germans don't go to church very often.

How is this in the USA/ NZ/ Canada?

Depends on the diocese. In ours, a kid preparing for confirmation can miss only 2 days in each of the 2 years of preparation, so 4 days total of classes. My daughter just made her confirmation last year, and only missing 4 days in 2 years was difficult, especially when she had really hard classes last year.
