From the first time I read this story the characters became so real. The things they were going through and the things they had to do were so interesting. I was sucked into the story until it was over. Every time I re-read it I feel like I'm visiting with old friends.

The Stand is my favorite SK story. And I've read them all.

What do you think?

I think you are right on! I've read The Stand 11 times now, 5 of them the long version which I loved even more than the first! I feel such a connection to all of the characters. I laugh with them and cry with them. Everything seems so real to me. I relate to every charachter in some way. To me that is the magic of his writing. King gets inside our head. He knows our thoughts, our fears, our loves and our sorrows.

It's number 3 on my list, behind IT and 11/22/63. I was actually a bit apprehensive about reading this, I remember thinking "how much can you like a 'good vs evil showdown' story? But when I was in one of my Wasteland/Wizard & Glass "lows" I read the intro - the soldier fleeing frantically with his family, and thought "hang on a minute, that's a frenzied start to such a big book, maybe I am ready to read this after all". When I did read it, I was awe struck at the depth of the characters and the different situations they were all in. I loved reading about all of the characters (except 'The Kid', I found him and his bits too ridiculous), I even enjoyed reading about Frannie, although her character was whiney and annoying.

I'm 400 pages into it, for the very 1st time. I tried reading it when I was younger but it was just too much for me so I put it down.
So far I'm loving it, can't put it down! I'm enjoying how relentless King was with the characters, and how unpredictable everything has turned out to be. King has always been sort of relentless with characters but man, there are some real shockers in this one. Situations and shocks that make you look up from the book for a minute with your mouth gaping, lol.

I never did watch the movie, only bits and pieces... I'm thankful for that now, since nothing has been spoiled!

Yay! Amazing how quickly you'll read that 1000+ page novel. It's so good.
