Just finished reading Dan Simmon's Chasing The Rubber Chicken. It's a small chapbook that contains three award ceremony speeches he gave back in the early '90's. In one of them he praises Stephen King but at the same time he states that he doesn't believe King will be widely read a hundred years from now as he (King) relies on too much placement of everyday objects such as Kleenex, Pepsi, etc. and that noone will care about all of that. Well, all I have to say is that if someone wants to know what everyday life was like back in England in the 1800's they only need to read Charles Dickens. I believe that SK is the Dickens of our generation. He goes into detail what it is to grow up in a small town in Maine and what life has been or is like for all of us now. So, a hundred years from now when someone wants to see how life was in America in the late twentieth century all they will need to do is look for a King novel to give them a glimpse.

I've read all of Simmons books except for The Abdominable which is on my TBR pile. He is a great writer. He is also more of an idea guy than a character guy. I always find his characters cold. I really enjoyed Black Hill - in many ways it reminds me of his version of The Dead Zone.

Carrion Comfort is closest in style to a King book and is a great mix of horror and SF.

I've got this first edition Prayers to Broken Stones on my book shelf that I'm dying to get started on. That, and The Abominable.

Too many damn books and not enough time!
Preaching to the choir, sister, preaching to the choir! You should really like Prayers (I haven't read Abominable yet, it's in my TBR pile). Prayers shows the versitality of Simmons writing.

I'm too lazy to look right now. Is this a collection of Dan's sketches only?
It does have some cool sketches in it (including one he did of the real Dracula's castle), but it is also a small non-fiction study on his travels around the world and where/how he got ideas for stories or books. It's a pretty cool book, one that I owned before but sold on ebay when I moved across the state and had to downsize the book collection.
