Jesus... that stuff is way worse than basically just (crudely) paraphrasing the Bible about sexual deviancy. So much for the "smartest businessman I know" nonsense.
And on top of that,

He thinks men should marry 15 year old girls?
I don't know if he really believes this crap he spouts or if the show just wants more ratings. Either way, I think he's a bigoted, misogynistic jerk, and I'll be very glad when Hick TV has seen the tail end of its heyday.

I am not going to 'like' any of the responses in this thread. Not because I don't like the posters, but because I will never have any thing to do with this show. Phil is as entitled to his opinions as any of us and good for him that he stands up for them. But, he is a racist and a hater (while calling himself a God loving person?). His kind of thinking is antiquated and, for me, deplorable. God loving indeed. Show me where it says 'Love Thy Neighbor UNLESS............' God says 'Love Thy Neighbor.' Period. PERIOD!
(Can't wait till one of his grandchildren comes out of the closet.)

On second thought, the video where he says men should marry 15 year old girls was recorded in 2009. Duck Dynasty didn't start until 2012. That wasn't for ratings. He's just a misogynistic jerk.

I agree exactly. Nobody said "Love thy neighbor as long as they look like you, act like you and agree with you." The god-fearing hypocrisy is astounding.

They won't because they would be too afraid they would get shunned. So instead, this person will lead a lonely and unfulfilling life. Who would want that for their child or grandchild? So sad.

Yes, you're right. It truly is a sad thing. I know it was hard for me growing up knowing that I was gay and hearing the derogatory comments made by adult (and I thought at the time to be smart) family members. I hope that maybe he (Phil) will see himself in a different light now, but I sure ain't gonna hold my breath.

And they'd never get a dime of all that Duck Dynasty money.
Unless they were really smart about it and make their coming out public and got the support of millions of people, and maybe his own show.

I'd rather live proud and poor than be rich and living a lie. Hey, wait a minute, I already do!

To each his own. I love Phil and his family. Don't agree with everything they say, but I love 'em just the same. And he is not talking about older men, but men (boys) who are close to the same age. And this was from a video in 2009. Old news. Folks just love to take things out of context. It is also funny how people are when they disagree with others. People get hateful when they disagree. We are only human. I support Phil, and I support you as well. :) Peace and love.

I am not gay. I am not against gays. In fact, I have people very close to me who are either gay or bi. I support gay rights...but, just because you or I like gays doesn't mean everyone has to. Phil doesn't hate gays either. He loves them, in fact, because he loves all people. He stated his belief that being gay is a sin. Is it? God and his son only know for sure. And to those who say he is racist...well, I'll not go there. I'll just make it simple...he is not racist, or a gay hater.

I'm not trying to ruffle feathers here. Really I'm not. I just get tired of this stuff going around. I live fairly close to these people and know people who know them personally. I also know and love others who feel the way they do (I also know and love people that disagree with some, if not all, of what they believe). I guess my feathers get ruffled sometimes. To any who respond to my posts here, I've said what I'll say already, so I won't reply. No disrespect, I just don't like arguing, and these things tend to go and on with no end. So up front, I'll just agree to disagree. If I have offended anyone, gay, straight or otherwise...I am truly sorry. I love you all despite our disagreements. Its one of the things that can be great about this world of ours. Much love and peace to all. And a happy 2014!

It's not proper for a male of any age to marry a 15 year old girl. A boy that age is too young to marry as well, and any man of legal age doesn't need to be looking at a 15 year old girl for marriage. There's just no right way for that to come across.
It all goes toward showing his mentality. The fact that it's old news proves that it's how he thinks, not some publicity stunt for the show since the show didn't exist yet. It's relevant in that respect, absolutely. Not out of context at all.
What really bothers me about it is that young people watch this show, and might even consider him a role model because he's a celebrity. He's funny. He's quirky. Whatever. And that's not the type of mentality we need for any young people to be learning. It absolutely should not be tolerated. Men like that set civil rights back about 50 years - which is where his limited mentality seems to be stuck. It's reprehensible.

I'll be frank when discussing things like this, but I won't be hateful toward you. I can disagree with you and respect you at the same time.

He is a pretty old man and still believes what the Bible tells (in the Old Testament) so it's hard to change someone like that. But yes - you are right - it would have been better if in that article in GQ he had just kept his opinion re gays to himself. Apparently they quoted an article from GQ magazine so there was no script as such.

Might I correct this to "he still believes his interpretation of what the Bible tells". At least he's not saying being gay is wrong, while showing off tattoos. (I googled pictures and see no tattoos.)

I understand the clip about marrying a 15 year old is old, but how old was he? I heard a reporter discussing it (didn't hear the actual clip myself) but I thought he also said something about getting the 15 year old's parents permission. Hey! Worked for Steven Tyler.

I did not see this video from 2009 but I do believe when he renewed his vows with Ms. Kay that she mentioned something about how he was once a mean man and then over the years he got better.

So perhaps it is the old 'if you get a girl pregnant you should marry her' kind of thinking - no, I am not implying Kay was pregnant when she married Phil!

With both my parents being very conservative and old school I was exposed to this way of thinking when I was younger and it took a lot of self education before I realized there were other ways of looking at life. There is nothing wrong with traditional values, but I do not take the Bible literally.

Education is a wonderful thing and hate and ignorance will not triumph over love and tolerance.

Stuff like this is why I stopped going to that Baptist church.

I had a boyfriend a while back and he went to this born again, Praise Jesus etc. type of church. I did not last very long there.

My background is originally Catholic but I try not to discuss religion or politics if I can help it. I was just trying to figure out where he was coming from.

He did say in that video - marry those girls when they are 15 or 16 but get the parents permission. Wow - people these days wait until they are late twenties or early 30s to get married I would say. I cannot imagine a 16 year old being ready for marriage.

Never mind mom and dad. That's just statutory rape with parental permission. No man needs to even THINK about a 15 year old that way. These aren't the dark ages. Outside of that guy's mind, anyway.

I agree with people's and churches' interpretations of the bible. They use it as an excuse to do whatever they want to do, finding some passage that supports their cause. If I wanted to find a reason to paint all the trees in my yard purple and blue, I could probably find a passage to support that, too. Doesn't make it right.

I grew up with family member's that were (and are) racist. I also grew up with a father who told me over and over that while he (and my family) has opinions, I should seek my own truth and not listen to what anyone thinks, including my family, and that I will always be loved. That's the way to raise a kid. (Of course, he's livid that I'm a Democrat so maybe it's easier to preach than practice, but boy am I glad he preached it.)
