You got that right. Hard not to jack up the volume every time I hear it. I'm not sure who the female background singer is on that song, but her voice is just haunting and beautiful all the way thru the song.

Her name is Merry Clayton. She also did backup vocals for Tom Jones, Joe Cocker and Carole King

Ha! Great thread and topic. Hubby and I saw them twice. Love the Stones! Always partial to Kieth. He is so awesome. When we are doing Vinyl night, which consists of drinking and listening to records, we usually pull out the Let it Bleed or Sticky Fingers vinyl! When we played in the band together, we covered "Satisfaction", "Can't Hear Me Knocking", and "Get Off My Cloud".

I saw a movie called "Shine a Light" at the Imax theatre and that was really quite good. Buddy Guy was jamming with them. I liked the flashbacks to when they were just starting out and being interviewed in their 20s.

We did too. I still love Gimme Shelter. Did anyone see the HBO one, where they are talking over all the scenes. The showed it again on Keith's birthday last week.

The female backing singer on "Gimme Shelter' is Merry Clayton-no, I did not misspell her name, it's Merry, as in Christmas, the day she was born.
Anyways, she had her own solo career after GS. Some of her songs include 'Southern Man' (Neil Young), 'Tell All the People' (The Doors), 'Gimme Shelter,' and more. Here's her recording of 'Gimme Shelter':

Do you mean 'Crossfire Hurricane'? If so, I have that one on DVD (missed the original viewing! :( )...I felt it was okay, but wished it went on up to 2012...

I just remembered an old story of mine (it's really true - honest!)

The boyfriend at the time (I was around 19 years old) wanted to take me to the El Mocambo in Toronto to see April Wine but I did not really want to see them.

The next day the headlines in the Toronto Star were "Surprise Visit by Rolling Stones to El Mocambo club" - crap - I could not care less about April Wine but I would have loved to see the Stones!

I was fortunate enough to be able to go with my Dad this past summer to see the Stones' 2nd night in Philly. Amazing road trip, amazing seats (far from Tongue Pit seats, not $85 lottery seats!), and an amazing show! I would argue that it was the best 2013 show, beating the Hyde Park shows & Glastonbury, based off of the footage I've seen. BEST version of CYHMK was performed, and they got Aaron Neville to sing 'Under the Board Walk' with them, for starters. Those examples don't even shine a light on the experience! (Couldn't resist! :p )

Wow - to see them in person and to hear Aaron Neville singing with them - you were truly lucky! - nothing beats a live show :chuncky:

There's a documentary that was released in 2013 called "20 Feet from Stardom", about people like Merry Clayton who sing back up vocals with stars. It's a compelling documentary with lots of good stories and music. One part has Mick talking about Merry Clayton coming into the studio to record her vocals for "Gimme Shelter", and they play just her voice isolated from the rest of the track...what a set of pipes that woman has!

I highly recommend this documentary!

In my opinion, (from other things I've read) that was one of the best shows on this tour! Can't wait for YouTube videos of them on the 14 On Fire tour this year! :)
