I caught this one on cable recently and man is it bad, but in a watchable way. The whole film is a conceptual mess. What is it supposed to be about? Pollution, workers vs management, the mice in their million hordes? King Rat is one bad rodent though. Whatever his beef he is one angry rat.

I think the concept of creating a horror story centered around working overnight is/was a great idea. I work a 3rd shift job so the thought of this kind of a story appeals to me. Maybe something else other than a big rat could have made the plot much better- not to say I didn't like the work because I like all of Kings stories.

I believe the rat, with its' notorious history, was meant to target our core psychological fears. Who doesn't shutter a little when they see one and hear subtle whispers of black death? Anyway, that was my take.

I watched this one w/ Richard, my daughter's godfather who does film & broadcasting for a living, and he said "Oh yeah. This is how they did horror at the beginning of the 80's." He didn't even work in film then (he was in the National Guard then) but he knows the history of film & television now. He has a degree in Communications & Theatre.

I believe it was an effort to write like H.P Lovecraft's Rats In the Walls.
