It's 2am in Scotland. In 36 hours I'm marrying my best friend. I've spent the last few days at my future in-laws house in the beautiful Scottish countryside, enjoying their hospitality and putting the finishing touches to our wedding. I've spent most of this evening drinking red wine in my future father in law's shed and enjoying a relaxing night in the pub with one of my groomsmen. I literally don't think I could be any happier :) :) :)

Congrats on your marriage!!

You're going to read on your honeymoon?? You must have some serious powers of concentration!

Decided to do something with my weekends this winter rather than just sitting in front of the TV. So I plotted my stealthy mission. There was an announcement a few years back of expansion for the ski resort, just up the road, which would turn it into a year-long resort destination. But nothing has come of it, and it has all but been forgotten. So I decided to go to their job fair last night and see about getting a weekend job, and hoped in the course of the employment see if I can find out what the future plans would be. Because if it were to happen I’d purchase a location zoned for retail and open up an operation catering to visitors, as there is virtually no retail operation of any kind in the general proximity. Now some of you might find this hard to believe, but I’m a very friendly person, whom people for some reason open up to from the get-go. So I start talking to some of the staff, and meet the CFO. We talk for about a half an hour about their operation, and their future plans and challenges. So, I’ve already got inside information and timeline on what the future holds, and I’ve not even employed yet. The CFO takes me to the third area of hiring, skipping the second, and tells each person at the different zones to hire me for whatever I want. So after talking to different people at the different divisions, I decide on Saturday in finance and Sunday in marketing. Now, even though the pay for part-time is lousy, I get a free season ski pass, and most importantly I figure working in those two areas would help to provide me with all the demographics I would need to make an educated decision on the type of retail operation to open.

But I’ve already gotten myself in trouble. Three of the managers were talking to me, laughing and telling stories, and ignoring the interviews. The GM walks in and wants to know what is going on. I tell her it was my fault because I was fascinated by their Ski operation and had so many questions about all the different areas of operation, and the managers were just being extremely helpful. She asked me who I was, and I told her, and said she looked familiar to me. Here it turns out she was part of our gang back in high school, but the one girl that didn’t like me very much. She asked me why I was there, and I said my one daughter is off to college, and the other is in high school, and my weekends are now freed up... and I just wanted to do something fun over the winter. She said it looks like things never change and I’m still a trouble-maker.. and it will be fun firing me. I told her good luck with that because I’ve got a good memory about our wild years and I’m not beneath utilizing blackmail. We both laughed, and said welcome to the family, but she'll be keeping an eye on me. I replied "good, that makes the challenge much more fun." :)

I go this weekend for orientation if I decide to actually take the job.

Good luck--sounds like you might need it!

Given your experience with the skiers leaving the resort with less than stellar driving abilities, have you considered stocking mailboxes and posts if you open a retail location so that you can at least get your replacements wholesale? ;-D

Sounds like fun for the winter. Just be careful== high school girls remember a lot and can be very unforgiving, especially when in a managing position. Much success with your future plans- sounds like a winner.

Great Idea! I can even offer cards for mailbox replacement discounts to drunken skiers for when they take boxes out. It would get laughs if nothing else.

And I told them yesterday the Ski Resort owes me about 10 mail boxes because of their crazy skiers, and I was here to collect. The CFO laughed and said I should be a bartender for them with my sense of humor.

That's a great idea, too!

With tips bar tending might pay better than the other positions. ;)

True, but I don’t have patience with drunks. And the last time I bartended was at a sporting club block shoot. A 90 year old guy came up for a beer and I jokingly asked him for some ID. He left and came back with his shotgun and told me “Here is my ID.” :)

Good luck with opening your retail store and good luck with the job, too. I hope it won't be stressful working for that girl.
