King's Garbage Truck with the byline Steve King was a column printed in The Maine Campus (the University of Maine newspaper) in 1969 and 1970. The Fogler Library has them on microfilm but they're not widely available otherwise except for copies people have saved or photocopied over the years.

I must be the most clueless King fan alive. I've never heard of a lot of the soopersekrit stuff that people talk about here, and never gave a thought to special editions, limited editions, multiple copies, etc. etc. I've been doodling along in my word tent for years, just happy to get a new story once or twice a year-lol :D
I'm the same. I was wondering what Steve's Garbage Truck referred to. I thought it was an actual garbage truck he had. Silly me.

Yes, although it didn't take much to resist. He feels the writing is sophomoric and would rather it not be read by the general public.
I have always suspected he felt that way, and am sorry he does. It reflected who he was - who many of us were - at the time. His passion (in my humble opinion) did not suffer for want of technique or polish.

He has been (LONG ago) berated as a 'genre hack'. He writes of so much more than the dark corners of our lives, and the Garbage Truck column was one of those things - what it was like to be part of a generation that truly believed we could (and should) shake the world.

Do you mean I shouldn't have let the original question through? :a11: (I had no idea what "The Garbage Truck" was, sorry...)
No, no, the question was fine to be asked. I meant that Steve doesn't want the actual columns re-printed and has refused offers to publish them as recently as a couple months ago in response to Bev's post about seeing something about it many years ago. :smile2:
