In the book The Chrysalids by John Wyndham these horses were first thought to be mutants, but when it was proven they were an actual breed, the farmers were allowed to keep them, rather than banishing them to the "Fringes".
In their world, anything not conforming to a certain norm was considered an 'abomination' or a 'blasphemy'.
Great book! You should read it, if you haven't yet. We had to read this in high school, but I recall reading it again many years later just for enjoyment.
They also tried to banish Manx cats, until it was proven that they were a specific breed, born without tails.
I've read the book. Wyndham's great, and one who sK recommends in Danse Macabre.
