Today, we mark 28 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch at 10:39 a.m. on January 28, 1986. The disaster took the lives of seven crew members.

Do you remember where you were?

yep...Florida...had this old color television, big honkin' model...traded a Pontiac LeMans for the teevee, a bicycle, and a hot camera didn't know it was hot...anyway, the sound went on the teevee 15 minutes after I plugged it in, but the walls of the rooming house were thin, so I just watched what the neighbor was watching...got the sound through the heat vent. Bunch of us standing around looking at the teevee...no sound, the neighbor wasn't home, just the color image over and over again.

Given the time of day and the fact I'd have been just shy of 13...I was probably at school or just getting home. Actually...I might have run home already, dropped my bag off, and gone to a friend's house - TV used to still cover shuttle launches then, and my mate and I were (and still are) space mad. Unfortunately, I can't be certain either way, but I do remember the off-colour jokes that went around...

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of Sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High into the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through the footless hall of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wingswept height with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The untrespassed sanctify of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

That's pretty . . .

Did you write it? . . .I don't recall ever reading or hearing it before.

President Reagan spoke those words .....
