Two very different books. It makes them difficult to compare. However, I was a bit disappointed with Dr. Sleep. It was nice to find out happened to Danny and some of the characters from the Shining but the book itself was very predictable with the inevitable confrontation. That doesn't mean that I did not like it. Just that it was disappointing as a sequel to the Shining. Joyland was a good story. You could almost tell that King enjoyed writing it. An impression I didn't get from Dr. Sleep where he seemed to be struggling to compete against his younger self and failing. He's a different writer now and he came off more suited for Joyland than DrS in my opinion.

I'll agree with the majority here. Two different books. I liked Dr. S for what it was, and the Knot scared me not because of their supernatural nature, but because of the number of kids that actually go missing every year.

Joyland...?

I think I liked Erin, but Annie stole my heart early in. I was glad our fearless leader didnt follow his normal pattern.

Stephen had often said that the heart doesn't always get what the heart wants...
And the women are denied to the heroes... glad to see Dev and Annie spend an evening together.

So, both have made my reading rotation.

I liked them both, but if I was forced to pick one, it would be Joyland. Two reasons stick out. Most importantly I remember Joyland quite well and other than the ending, Dr. Sleeps details elude me. The lesser reason is the girl on the cover of the original US version looks like my first girlfriend Eileen.

I liked the book title 'Doctor Sleep' better than the book title 'Joyland'. They were both fine reads. They were both very fine reads.

I loved them both. Can't choose.
Yes - like you said

They were both good in their own way - I got a bit choked up over Joyland at the end whereas Doctor Sleep almost felt like he was fulfilling a wish of his fans for a sequel. (not meant as a criticism).

As usual, excellent writing in both (I thought)
I would read either one again in a heart beat

If this is true, you sir, were a very lucky man!
