The necessity of shopping compelled me to try to start the car, which, of course, it would not. I called my insurance again and again had them phone the local service, as otherwise they would call the nearest service signed up with them which is thirty miles away. A guy came right over, but with the first jump start unit the car wouldn't start. He left and came back with another, but the engine still would not turn over at all. He said my battery was toast, but I pointed out it started instantly the time the other guy from the same place brought a jump start unit, and started fine for me on a warmer day. He then said maybe it wasn't the car that wasn't so good, but the units, and he would need jumper cables. He checked his rig but his had been stolen, so we attacked with implements of destruction my trunk, which was piled high with snow and frozen solid with ice. It's lucky he was young and strong as a lesser mortal couldn't have done it. I had to pull up on the trunk release while he pushed so hard he didn't so much pop open the trunk, but lifted the entire car so the trunk finally fell open from the weight. But it did open and we got the car started with the jumper cables. Later Mom did a wash and since the temperature was up to 25º or so it went all the way through without the pipes freezing.
