I've seen suggestions to wrap the bait in a cutting of old pantyhose. The theory is that it's teeth will hang up on the hose so it can't steal the bait and run.

Just smushing it into the bait holder has always worked for me. I live out in the country and deal with them all the time getting into the garage (the electric garage doors do not fit very tight all the way around), especially in spring and fall.

Live trap-- offer to local pet shop ( don't ask questions as to what they'll do with it--see OoO post #6)
Do not use any poisons if you have critters. They are life threatening.
20 miles is not enough space.
Once you have it gone, purchase some Essential Oil Lavender (health food stores sell it). Place several drops on a cotton balls and place them anywhere you think a mouse may enter. Watch bird feeders or any left over foods/ dumpster- trash cans.
It's cold they are searching for warmth and food.

if all else fails- local feed store, heavy duty snap trap. (cruel)
Maybe Buckwheat and Pyro can help??
Good luck!
Good advice, Spidey! I have some essential lavender oil on hand.
I don't care what the pet store feeds it to....as long as I never see it again. Pythons have to eat, right?

Take a brown paper bag .Tape it to the edge of a surface(counter top, stove,)wherever you see the mouse has been .put bait in the bottom of the bag(Cheese, peanutbutter) the mouse will go after it and can't get out.So there you will have him.
This is interesting.....And I think it would work.
I haven't seen any evidence of it being on the countertops, or in the cabinets yet. Only to the dogs bowl.

After typing that, I have to wonder if I have a mouse or a mole. I think mice can climb, and I have bread and fruit and veggies on the counter tops.
Wouldn't it make sense for it to go after those things as well?

If it had been there, you'd know. Mice poop and pee constantly. Our neighbors have a vacant, crap-filled lot behind us, and we've dealt with mice ever since our Basset Hound died about five years ago (she was an INCREDIBLE mouser! Who knew?). What worked best for us is live traps (PB on cheerios worked for us) and poison bait placed where no other living thing could get to it inadvertently--i.e., behind the kitchen drawers and in the very back corner on the floor behind the couch.
