I read a lot of other stuff as well, but SK sets the bar high - I nitpick other authors based on his perfection. I like Steinbeck (Cannery Row stuff mostly), McMurtry (his character development is intense, like SK), Koontz (sometimes, he scares me though), Marian Keyes (laugh out loud funny) and Fannie Flagg (ditto on the characters).

Holly, if you like Marian Keyes, you'd also like Claudia Carroll. A friend from Ireland started me on her books & she's so funny! I much prefer Brit & Irish 'chick lit' to American--less breathless gasping over impossible physical perfection & more humor, family, and realistic lives :)

I've found Diana Gabaldon to be very good. She pulled me into the story. "Outlander" is the first one of a series. Time travel in present day America and England to 1700 America, England and Scotland. I'm reading a number of authors now. What genres do you like to read?
Its funny how that book has so many names. Here the 1st book is sold as Cross Stitch ( I have that and Blood and Bone signed. I <3 her) and very rarely referred to as the Outlander Series....you're right though, they are SUCH good books! Have you read them all?

Yup and eagerly awaiting the newest book in the series. Can't remember the name right now. It's on her site tho. My library's going to buy it and I get to be the 1st to read it. Love that new book smell.

Written In My Own Heart's Blood is the title here and it's expected to be out in June. It was originally supposed to be out this past December so seems like a very long wait. :( Loving the series and very much looking forward to the next one. I'd been spoiled up to now because I was behind the curve and had been able to read them one after the other. One of the advantages of having ebook format is that I was able to upload the next one on my iPad within minutes of having finished one. Already have the next one on pre-order.

Oh - thanks for the ref - I'll give her a try. Me too on the Brit & Irish chic lit. I've read all MK and dying for someone to fill the void!

Try Joe Hill! His style is not exactly the same as SK's but it goes down just as easily.
I also find JK Rowling very easy to read.
Peter Straub's style can be challenging but his writing is like a fine wine, full of nuance.
I did like Heart Shaped Box - haven't had any luck finding Twentieth Century Ghosts, and I let NOS4A2 slip away - found it at a thrift store, read the first couple of pages and decided it was too scary. When I summoned the courage to go back and get it, someone else had snatched it - darn it!

Absolutely - her first book was the best but the rest of the series is very good as well! Love the Jamie and Claire story (and the American and Scottish history as well)

The Darkside of the Moon (England really)
I have never read other novels by anyone but king, not really out of choice, it's just that I came the party late when it comes to reading - I had no interest in reading until I was about 28. Since then, I have bought all of kings books and have no real urge to not read a king book. I do own own a handful of other authors books, I have 4 or 5 James Herbert books, da Vinci code, an assassin's creed book based off the game, hear shaped box, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, and I've just bought 5 hg wells novels. I will read them one day, but I'm not bored of king yet.

In terms of other authors in the same genre, I hear good things about Robert mccammon, and you could try James herbert, he was kind of dubbed the English Stephen king, and sk himself has said kind words about him, I believe. Did you like talisman and black house? You could try peter straub.
