So... I have finally started reading JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. I know, I know - I'm just a tad bit late to the party.

Has anyone else read them? I'm currently on Goblet of Fire and can't get enough! Favorite character? Book?

My 9 year old loves Harry Potter. He has all the books and the movies. We have a great used book store where he got his hardcovers for $6 each. Excellent condition too.
I need to get the hardbacks. My paperbacks are in less-than-ideal condition.

The wife and daughter read them all and were absolutely engrossed. There was one scene, though
when the old wizard gets killed
when my daughter said she threw the book across the room.

Have fun!
Shouldn't have read that spoiler... :(

I read them all from the get-go. Started before they were a sensation stateside as I worked in publishing and heard about the buzz going on across "the pond." I have always loved children's lit. By the time the last book came out though, I was done with Harry and the gang. I tend to get bored and frustrated by things that go on and on and on. Although I always knew there would be 7 books, by the time Deathly Hallows came out, I was tired of the hype.

That said, I do plan on rereading the series one day as I love the stories and characters. I just wish they had never become so popular... if that makes sense.

I have read all of them and enjoyed them alot. The first two were definately written for kids but after that they start to change and by the last book you know that it's an adult fantasy novel. Hard to pinpoint exactly when they changed from a kids book as Rowling's skill as a writer is just that good that you really can't find the point where she said 'Hey, we're going to grow up here and write something that will last thru the ages.' I also highly recommend her novel she wrote under the name Robert Galbraith entitled The Cuckoo's Calling.

Adult themes were hinted at in Azkaban and are really coming to fruition in Goblet.

I've been meaning to check that out! I got a brand new first edition of The Casual Vacancy at a thrift shop for $5. Have you (or anyone else reading this) read it yet? Thoughts? I've heard it's not quite as good as the HP series, but who knows...

I haven't read it. There were alot of lukewarm reviews posted on here by other members tho and I decided I didn't want to waste my time on a book that wasn't going to grab me. Let us know what you think of it.

I always considered that each book was written for kids the age of Harry and his friends. Since they age in each book, each book is written for slightly older people. Not many authors could do that so successfully.

Stephen King apparently has a lot of respect for J.K. Rowling as well.
