I just wanted to see other peoples thoughts on how UTD ended...

I loved the whole lack of Oxygen and everyone crawling out to the bottom of the Dome to get some air... but what's the deal with them 'leatherhead' people or whatever they were? I just couldn't get my head around it! Credit where its due, I cant think of an alternative way for the book to end, so well done to Mr. King for actually finishing it happily, but I just don't understand it...

Thoughts?

I'm reminded of an event in Hearts in Atlantis, a low boy in orange shirt and a female character, the one-on-one interactions in Hearts. I'm thinking leatherhead instead of leatherheads. But that calls to mind the same kind of interactions in another story, Needful Things, both one-one-one and the group dynamics. Interesting for what it says about identity, where an individual finds identity, leatherhead or human. Or how an individual identifies with another, with a group...or alone. Going along to get along...a phrase that I've read in several stories from King, an idea that finds expression in a number of ways, whether that be Breaker-U or Paul's job or unearthing a spaceship or surviving childhood.

Welcome! Are you talking about the book or the series? I totally don't remember the book ending this way, but I am a forgetful kind of gal.

Thanks for the welcome. I should've pointed out I mean the ending to the book. To jog your memory, Julia had to convince them leatherhead folks to set them free.

...the Leatherheads are an alien race-and the whole novel boils down to the locale of the story being nothing more than a "bug jar" for the alien kids to trifle with and torture, much like human kids have been known to do with a magnifying glass and an anthill...

Ah yes, that's the best way to put it. Put into perspective, it sounds like a good ending. I guess I misunderstood the whole prospect of the Leatherheads and in that sense the purpose of the Dome. Thanks for sharing that GNTLGNT! I tend to miss certain stuff when reading a book first time.

Aha - see that's what I remember - the ants under a glass or jar metaphor. The Leatherheads term doesn't ring any bells in my brain at all.

I'm thinking the mods are going to want spoilers with this thread. Quick- edit if you can before they see.

When a thread title has Spoilers written in it, I think people who come here should be prepared for spoilers.

Excellent point!
I need to see the Wizard of Oz. Mayhap pick up some brains. Does everyone have this memory problem with books or am I making an early descent into senility? I totally get absorbed in books while I read, but I almost never remember too many details about them.

I didn't really understand the ending either.... What really bugged me about the Dome itself was that if it was
a Leatherhead creation then why wasn't it just a circular dome? How did the Leatherheads know where the town/parish boundaries were to make the dome fit to?
I was personally hoping that it was a creation of The Shop as a new experiment. Thoughts anyone?

I liked the 'Leatherheads' though weather the image in my mind is anything like what was written, I'm not sure. I often see characters far differently from description. Anywho...my fave part of this story was when the writer speaks to the reader and takes us on a trip around the town...we see much of what is going on and it helps build the anticipation of knowing this story is heading in to some...excitement. The calm before the storm, kinda thing. The mental picture of that 'flyover' really stuck with me.
