I really enjoyed this tale. He reminded me of Basil Fawlty. (For my American friends, google. Very funny).
We got Basil over here - it was called Fawlty Towers and one time they rearranged the letters on the sign to read "Farty Towels" - I love John Cleese! (and the woman who played his wife was a perfect foil for him).

This is one of my favorite shots from the filming of our Dollar Baby adaptation:

Yeah. That waiter was great. But it almost ruined his career. Noone saw Andrew Sachs anymore, they only saw Manuel, the waiter from Barcelona. I only have to think of some the scenes in fawlty Towers to start laughing. For me it is the funniest TV-series aired.

This is an intense character reveal. The unexpected happens and how the characters respond strips them down to the bare essentials of who they are. The wife is a piece of work. I did wonder what the husband could have done (type A know it all?) to cause such hatred but by the end I realized that no matter what it was short of killing her pet or raping her sister the amount of animosity was likely unwarranted and a definite flaw all her own. I've known women who have seemingly changed, hardened into some stranger when they wished to break up and blame the other person though they knew well it was their own fault.

One of the flaws of the husband is revealed though. For the sake of face and figure he could ignore some seriously messed up flaws in the person he is supposed to be closest to in the world. I winced at that one seeing a bit of my younger self. I think by the end he wised up. I like to think he will now examine his shallow behavior in picking a mate. Perhaps the next poor choice will be avoided.

The people in this are unfortunately completely believable.

He did seem to be trying the role on but empathy- remember he wondered what could cause the fellow to snap- is more a trait of the sane. The truely psychotic are in their own world with no desire to leave it. Self- destructive I'll give you. Youth itself for most guys is a self-destructive process. Women are wiser but for many of them too. The petty I somehow missed. Shallow absolutely, but it's the kind you get over if you are smart. He did not seem dumb to me.

The eeeee eeeee eeeee aside from being effective is the theme from psycho though so... hmmm.

Ah the slap was petty revenge. That it? Propensity for violence too though without that they would not be alive no matter how the exwife strove insanely to deny it. To me the slap seemed a poor response to her insane hatred.
