It was the first hard cover edition and now there saying it had to be me that damaged it. They claim they don't issue books like that. I might have to pay for a replacement. Hope The Library Policeman does not come after me! Funny thing is the first SK book I read was a first edition hard cover of Pet Sematary my sister borrowed from the library when I was 12 and I stole it from her and kept it. That copy ended up being damaged by me in the same exact way as the current copy I borrowed from the library is.

Dang - you could have just told them you lost it and kept it - First Edition!!
I am a horrible library patron. I'm sure my fines are over $35. And I could pay it, but I'm too embarrassed. Maybe I should just mail a check and ask them to pretend like it never happened. They just stare at me with those mean librarian smirks when I'm there.

What's the damage? I'm intrigued.

Yeah I should have kept it, oh well. The Library over here has a way to pay fees online with a credit or debit card, maybe you could check if yours does too? The damage is that the second half of the book fell out of the spine. The whole part that fell out is still intact, the pages are still attached together. The part I hate is when the Library manager asked me on the phone who checked it out to me and I told her she said she was going to write up that person. I hate getting her in trouble, she's always been so nice to me.

I need to see about that online payment thingy. Excellent invention!
Spines just fall out of old books sometimes, don't they know that? Librarians can be very scary.

I've learned by hard experience to vet every book before I check it out--I've been tagged for damage I didn't do too many times (and sometimes for damage I DID do… like when I tried reading in the shower… Don't do that. Really.) It's frustrating when you KNOW you didn't do it, but I pay because I can't imagine not being able to use the library :)

Walked through our children's library recently- was a little boy standing in front of a screen bigger than him with a couple of huge round colored things singing and dancing and a poster on the wall advertising preschool storytime in the gardens. No sign of the library policeman.
We search the catalogue online and if a book we want is at another branch I receive an sms at 2:20 the following afternoon confirming it's in the holding area for collection.
If we find a damaged dvd I put a note re damage in it before returning. Found one book damaged but daughter had been looking for it so borrowed, careful with it and returned without incident.
We can even lodge requests for future purchases if something not in the catalogue and borrowing queue for soon to be released 'on order' books.
Excellent service
