Just finished this story last night. The story deals with our changing perception of time. How it goes by so slowly when we're young and just itching to be older and do all the things grownups do.
And then comes the slippery speedup in time when we're "over the hill" and gaining speed. The grandpa gives "instruction" to his grandson as best as he can and to his credit the grandson takes that instruction as best as he can perceive it.
It reminds me of some "instruction" I gave to my oldest son. He was curious about electricity so just to see what would happen he stuck a corn cob holder (yellow plastic end mimicking corn with 2 metal prongs) into a electrical duplex outlet. The results were enlightening to say the least. Fortunately he wasn't hurt and his older sister and younger brother also were present for his Mr. Wizard science experiment. After putting out the fire and checking the wiring for damage I pulled the smokey duplex outlet from the wall and placed it along with the melted corn cob holder into a plastic bag and gave it to my eldest son. I told him "Some day you'll have children and they're going to do something really stupid. Just remember this souvenir from your youth."
