I can't remember what happened in the movie, but I do believe that in the book he talked to his especial friends about John's situation. As far as I remember, they knew most of what Paul learned/intuited.

Ah, makes sense. That doesn't happen in the movie onscreen, at least not the version I watched, but their reactions seemed to imply they knew.

That story, both on paper and screen... broke (and filled) my heart.

Isn't there a scene in the movie where Hanks chracter has everyone (except the warden) over for a picnic and he tells them what's going on and that he wants to take John to the warden's house to cure the wife? I thought at that point Hanks character had either told all of them before about John's powers and of his innocence or was telling them at the picnic. You all do realize that John Coffey's initials weren't an accident, right? JC- John Coffey & Jesus Christ.

Actually they did have the diner scene in the movie too. And in fact they did have a lot of support and respect for Edgecomb at the very least because they supported and helped him with Percy.

And of course, on the electric chair at his execution, they said "Look at us John, we don't hate you.".
