I'm only a bit past half-way through this book, but I'm captivated by the personality and the will of DC. Quite a woman.

I noted, and it caused me to post this, that she made a comment when the town on the island was deserted that it reminded her of "the little town in the southern part of the state where they say no one lived." That's got to be a reference to Jerusalem's Lot right?

I consider this one of Mr. King's strongest books. In voice and storyline, it's the one I'd suggest for anyone who thinks he's all about horror. DC is a powerful, fully fleshed character--I quite literally read it three times in a row (as in finishing as in finishing and starting all over again on page 1) and marveled in its tight storyline. It's a gorgeous book.

And, yes, I took that to be Jerusalem's Lot, too :)

Just finished it. I'll have to sit with it a while before I fully grasp what I think of it. But I haven't changed my mind about the fact that DC's one of the most interesting characters I've ever read about. I like the criss-cross with Gerald's Game. King likes to do things like that and I wonder if he enjoys writing them as much as his fans enjoy finding them. I'll say this though. There was a line in it that was chilling. It made me sit back a bit. "...everything I did, I did for love..." True, and in context understandable. But still, chilling.

Now I'm off to start The Shining. Been 25 years since I read it. And I'm a much more competent reader now than I was then. Exciting.

King has been quoted as saying that the 'voice' of Delores comes from his own Mother. I imagine that Ruth Nellie Pillsbury King was one tough North Eastern woman. She would have had to have been. It's too bad she wasn't around after Carrie was published to see just how wonderful and fantastic her little Stevie's life turned out.....

I highly recommend seeing the movie that was made from this book. Once again Kathy Bates gives an Oscar worthy performance as Delores! Pity this film wasn't seen by a larger audience.

This is one I didn't read but the movie was great. It has such a dark quality to it and a heaviness a lot of people just are not comfortable with when watching films for entertainment purposes only.

I agree. My mood often dictates what kind of movie I watch. If I want to be entertained, I choose a very different type of movie than I do if I want to think or be moved. Same with books. On most Friday nights, I watch some scary movie with my older kids starting around 11:00 when my wife and the younger kids go to bed. My wife does NOT like horror movies of any type. When I was a kid, I watched Friday Night Frights with my Mom because my Dad didn't like them. Funny how the circle turns. But I look forward to it, usually to see my kids enjoy it. I rarely get frightened from movies, though I enjoy good stories anyway.

A movie like DC would be weighty. I'd need to be in the mood for it. But I'll get around to it at some point. Assuming I don't die or the Lord doesn't return first.

I remember reading this for the first time and thinking woah, there's so much more to SK than things that go grrrrr in the night.

I don't want to do a spoilerama for anyone who hasn't read it, but DC is a sobering reminder that some human beings lack humanity. :facepalm_smiley:

Just finished reading DC and love it! I saw the movie when it came out & didn't think much about it. It was good, but I was young..will be watching it again today! As they stated before, I was stuck on the whole empty town part & came to the conclusion of Salem's lot also. I googled pictures of SK map of Maine & the lot is north of little tall island. Oh well, glad I read it & thanks for reading my post!
