My favorite Nimoy meme. I have this on my bulletin board in my office. So long Spock! :-(

I am a serious Star Trek (original TV series) fan, and feel that Spock was an entirely new kind of modern (at the time) TV character. Later on in life I became a major Sherlock Holmes fan and when watching Star Trek reruns noted that Spock seemed to me based on Sherlock Holmes, and even used Holmes' most famous phrases. Conan Doyle used them to remind readers that Holmes was a super-intellectual, alien to this world in his way, and Spock made them iconic. The comments "incredible", "fascinating", and "that is illogical" can't be uttered or seen in print without causing someone to think of Spock. This was my favorite thing about Spock, and he became one of my favorite TV characters of all-time.

R.I.P. Leonard Nimoy, Mr Spock.

The hero of my childhood has fallen.

Nimoy lived longed and prospered. And in the process of his life journey, he energized many others to do so as well.

His last tweet was beautiful:

A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

The science station is unmanned.

Absolutely. The creation of the Spock character was a stroke of genius for Roddenberry, and he had to fight hard to keep it, going up against the network execs who were aghast at the thought of having a satanic-looking alien in the show, as a good guy, even more moral than most of the other good guys, and even second in command.

Without Spock, Star Trek becomes another space romp (albeit more well done than others; its main competition at the time was Lost In Space). And then without the right person to play Spock, the character falls flat. Leonard Nimoy delivered on the character and, as you say, became iconic in the role.

The icing on the cake: Not only was he very accomplished in his art (acting, directing, photography), but by all accounts he was a heck of a nice guy as well.
