I would like to encourage everyone to watch Oprah's Where Are They Now this coming Sunday. The new season starts with Matthew Shepard's parents.

Matthew Shepard, for those who don't know or remember, was a gay teen who was befriended by 2 young guys in Wyoming in 1998. They tortured and beat him and hung him off a barbed wire fence. He was so severely tortured and his face so traumatized, the only part that had no blood was where his tears washed the blood away.

He was found by a cyclist 18 hours after initial beating and the cyclist thought he was a scarecrow tied to the barbed-wire fence.

We have to stop this hate. Is violence and hatred what you want to be remembered for? This news story has stayed with me from the very first, and I would like to hear the update on his family, his foundation and the legacy he leaves when it comes to common human decency to the GLBTQI community.

I never met Matthew. I wish I had known him. I still get choked up thinking about what was done to him by those two strangers. I cannot imagine what his last hours were like.

God, that was so heartbreaking, and it's not the only one or the only time it's happened. I've never understood it, especially when there's two people involved in the violence - you would think one of them might have the heart or the decency to stop the other. Can you imagine if this was your son? I just don't understand violence and hatred. I don't know if I could watch the show, deej, this kind of stuff just horrifies me.

Something that offered me some comfort years after his murder- I saw his Mother on a talk show and she finally revealed that although Matthew died alone without another human being around, there were deer tracks left in the snow close to where he lay and the snow had marks in it that would indicate that the deer laid down in the snow. My hope is that the deer stayed with him as he died. His Mother kept this to herself (along with the police department) and didn't share this with the public at the time of his murder, she wanted to keep it for herself as it offered comfort to her soul. May Matthew's soul be free forever.

NEVER FORGET.

It makes my heart hurt for him and for his family. So many friends have suffered or narrowly avoided violence because of their sexuality (not to mention those who stay firmly in the closet out of fear). And why? It makes no damned sense--who the hell CARES who someone else loves or sleeps with (aside from spouses or significant others)? Too many tears over something that is no one's damn business.

I would just like to add, Oprah has a show called Master Class. I have watched many of these and have found them a fascinating and honest look into the lives of some interesting people. The ones I've seen:

Diane Sawyer
Barbara Walters
Morgan Freeman
Jane Fonda
Stevie Nicks
Condoleeza Rice
Diahann Carroll
Whoopie Goldberg
Sharon Stone

These are them talking about their path. Not an interview, but just a talk. They are not being interviewed.

Some of these are not only interesting but also inspirational.
