Here's my question about this whole thing (and maybe Ms. Mod or Bev Vincent might have some input).

I actually had a longer post written out, but I may use that for something else, so let me just ask: did the previous studio turnarounds come down to merchandise rights, do you think?

Unless there's something we (the general public) weren't told, it came down to the studios not wanting to invest the millions and millions (possible over a billion!) it would take to get this series going. Seven books all told (eight if you add WTTKH) is alot of material to get into a series of movies/television show. Personally, I think the studios bailed when Stephen King said he wouldn't be in it unless they made him Superior Emperor Of Everything......;;D

Probably had more to do with money for the production itself as the contract includes certain merchandising rights.

Y'know, some books just CAN'T be made into films--their very nature makes it impossible. Even with three films and a *choke* television series, trying to get all that DT goodness onto the screen just won't happen. And so much of DT works simply because they are books, as Uncle Stevie plays with the very form itself, and ties the series into a host of his other works--a feature that greatly enhances the mood and style of the overall story, and which Hollywood simply cannot include.

The end result would more than likely suck, and then we, the noble CONSTANT READERS, will be stuck with the dang thing, and have to go about explaining to the hapless, non-DT reading public how the 'books are SO much better, you don't understand, blah blah,' until it is like unto an albatross around our necks.

This happened for me with that wretched "On The Road" movie they released a coupla years back. Oh god, what a nightmare; helplessly explaining the original novel to all my friends and family, who said, "What? This is what you've been going on about these last twenty years? This boring, lifeless, steaming pile of echhhh?"

So apparently Sony are getting the guy who did the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo films to direct. He also made a film called A Royal Affair, but I haven't seen it. I just wonder how they are gonna do it, if they want a Harry Potter style franchise they might do 7 or 8 films.

I'm gonna pull a St. Thomas here and say I'll believe it when Sony shows me the nail marks. Otherwise, consider making The Gunslinger first as one movie and the remainder of The Tower in three installments. I understand it will require a genius to pull this off, but, hey, Peter Jackson did an excellent job with Lord of the Rings.

I hope the director continues his gritty realism for how he films this. Scott Eastwood as Roland would be nice. Im still only a few books in but I need to go back and read DT from the start

The appeal of being Clint Eastwood's son cannot be beat; Scott has that, but I don't see Roland in him. I have my own vision of Roland, and Scott looks too young for the role and will continue to, imho, til he's about 90.

BTW, can he act? So, we must keep searching.
