Just got done reading The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins really enjoyed it. Pulled a one nighter with it! Like the way she structured the story. Had trouble coming up with what next so as ashamed as I am to admit I bought V.C. Andrews Flowers in the attic. About 45 pages in and the story is decent but it just doesn't seem to be written in a way that is highly appealing to me. I'm not reading it with every free minute its more like if I run out of other things I have it there. I hate not having a good read ready and waiting.. ho hum

Loved The Girl on the Train!!! Definitely can't wait for whenever Hawkins writes another novel.

I'm currently reading The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer. It's about six kids who become friends at a summer camp for artistic teenagers in the '70s. The novel follows them through their life. It's pretty good.

OK, so I just finished The Troop by Nick Cutter. Wow. This book creeped me out! There were some really get-under-your-skin moments in it! There were some real gross-out moments, too. Some of those I had to kind of skim thru, and I'm a hard-core horror buff, but they were alittle too intense for me. One involved a turtle and that's all I'm gonna say about that. The story is a good one. The writing is not the greatest, but it had me turning the pages. I felt sorry for the kids in this tale, they were doomed from the get-go. It's about some teenage boys in the Scouts and their Scoutmaster who are on an uninhabited island for the weekend and something bad comes to them in the shape of a man. Sort of Lord Of The Flies meets The Thing. Nasty. The author even gives a nod to Stephen King- he thanks Steve for writing Carrie and being able to use that form of storytelling (using newspaper clippings, testimonials from witnesses, etc.) to tell his (Cutter's) tale. To quote: 'That said, I want to honor the Master. Honor paid.'

I just got his last one (The Deep) at the thrift shop this weekend--I think it came out in January? I have a couple of books to review first (Including Kate Atkinson's new one! I guess my editor decided to pass it on to me after all), but then I'm looking forward to reading it. I found The Troop derivative, but not unreadable, so I'm willing to give him another go :)

I loved Flowers in the Attic when I was in junior high :) I read it over and over. Haven't tried it since I've been a (semi) adult, though I suspect its appeal has probably waned.

Really the only reason that I went to that book is because Lifetime network is doing a series of movies. They have just showed the 3rd installment I believe it is...If there be thorns is the name I think. It seemed to be an interesting enough premise. Don't see a lot of incest due to solidarity type books...still haven't read any more pages but we'll see.

Can you give a shout if the Deep is any good? I found the Troop to be a trifle disappointing because it didn't have any originality what so ever. A mixture of some authors ideas without bothering to hide it and less well written than the originals. But still.. it wasn't bad...

I actually finished Moby Dick. I found out there are classics you can get for free on the Kindle, so I saud what the hey. It started really interesting. Loved the way Ishmeal met Queequog. Loved the very acceptance and respesct of different types of church going. Loved the line 'ignorance of fear'. Loved the word monomaniacal. There was a lot that was so overblown that I did a good bit of skimming. I understand the book was written a long time ago, so I understand the difference in syntax, etc. I also LOVED the end.

I also loved Flowers.
I read the whole series, The Dollanganger series or something like that I think they are called? The books that take place after Flowers in the Attic are even more disturbing. I think the book that goes back and tells the history of the grandmother is just as good or better than Flowers in the Attic. The whole series is just...strange.

Yes the dollangangers! Did you know that it seems she has started a new series that ties into that one that claims to be the diaries of family members so you get even more info and backstory! I guess I figured that to have that type of a following that calls for 10 or so books in the series there may be something to it. Seems everyone is a fan of these books I think I will push through and see how it ends. Thanks!

I hated Moby Dick. I think I'm just not intelligent enough to enjoy some of these classics.

I originally borrowed them from my wife. She recommended Flowers in the Attic to start with and I ended up going thru the whole series. I didn't think I'd like them, I'd always thought of V.C. Andrews as more of a "chick" book writer, no offense intended ladies, but I was hooked pretty quickly by just the weird plot line from the beginning. I tried a couple of other Andrews books outside the Dollanganger series but didn't like them quite as much. I think "Gardenshadows" is the book about the grandmother if I remember correctly. That one left me shaking my head for a while after I got done. It was pretty sinister and dark all the way thru.

That's what I thought: derivative, but readable. Not one I'd buy, but not one I felt irritated with myself for checking out from the library :)

I'm pretty sure I read up to and including Seeds of Yesterday.

You know, I think Stephen hates these books. Lol! I may be wrong but I think I remember somewhere reading he wasn't a fan.
That's how far I got, too. Didn't like Seeds much, as I remember, but the trashy glory of the first three (particularly the first two) made my 13-15 yo heart happy :)

I was massively bored when we had to read it in AP English in high school. His Billy Budd was even worse, and it was a novella. Couldn't stay awake more than two or three pages with either one. Might be something to approach again as an adult.
