I finished up Roadwork yesterday as I continue my journey through the SK library. As much as I hate to admit it, I wasn't overly excited to read this one. It surprised me, though. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but SK came through once again.
Roadwork is like a bad car wreck. Hard to look at it, but yet you find yourself unable to look away. King puts yet another male character through the wringer in Barton Dawes, following up the misery bestowed upon Johnny Smith (The Dead Zone) and Andy McGee (Firestarter). In Roadwork, we're witnesses to Bart losing literally everything: children, job, marriage, home, and, finally, his sanity. Roadwork is really a character study of man whose life is unraveling right in front of him, and an unflinching look at his descent into madness. It's a very dark, bleak novel (as all Bachman novels seem to be), but one that's definitely worth a read.
