Wow, what a great question! Maybe Lolita. The image of the nymphet that seduces an older man is so culturally pervasive and, I thought, disgusting. I finally read it about three years ago, as part of a classic book review series I was doing for a writer's workshop for which I was editing. It was disgusting (I wasn't wrong!), but also fascinating and horrible and incredibly well written. Finding out that the popular conception of this novel is 100% wrong was just icing on the cake. Humbert Humbert will live in my brain forever, crowned as the most despicable character in literature.

Well, that was a novel of an answer--lol!

Do you like classic books?

Nah, there is no boundary for me to read book, i'm okay with different genre and plot points.

Exceot to the genre that i've been avoiding for (cough, Romance, cough)

What did you do while reading an SK book (ex. Listening to music, making a problem, etc)
Sometimes music, sometimes quiet. NEVER while watching TV :)

Do you have a favorite genre of novel?

(Thank you. Lolita is a perfect example. I have steered clear for many reasons but I think I will eventually get around to it. I enjoyed your elaboration.)
I love Shakespeare and Homer. Steinbeck, Dickens, Charlotte Bronte. So many.

Is there an author still living that you think is overrated?

Oh my goodness, yes. Jonathan Franzen is first on my hit list--lol. I've read every one of his books, trying to understand what all the noise is about, and I just don't get it. He's an able writer, but all of the stories follow the same theme: "well-off white people behave badly and are filled with ennui." Rushdie is one I want to like, but I can't find the lock to that particular door. I've only made it all the way through The Satanic Verses and The Empress of Florence, though I've tried many others and been defeated by them.

Do you read across a wide variety of genres?

It seems we are simpatico when it comes to reading. I have only read The Corrections and I felt the same way. I would add Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal to that list.

I do read all over the spectrum. Genres like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and even books marketed to a particular group, I try to give it a whirl.

Do you have any favorite plays?

Do you enjoy trying new things?
