Dude,
No he can't. Nor can you. Nor can I. No one can (legally) without the author/publisher's permission.

You can paper your wall with pages of your favorite book, but you CAN NOT photocopy any of the pages in case you run out.

You CAN NOT read the copyrighted material into a recording device for later listening.

You CAN NOT press Silly Putty onto the page to take an impression.

You CAN NOT reproduce it in way, shape or form for ANY reason.

Many of S.K.'s books were not available in audio format at the time of publication. They are now. He will LOSE sales for audiobooks to anyone who has made their own amateur recordings.

Mr. King might not even care. Not all authors have BIG BUCKS like him. These provisions were put in place to protect the intellectual property of these authors.

No one knows what goes on behind closed doors. People break laws all the time and don't get caught.

But...when you publicly brag about offenses against those in your own profession...you cross the line.

He bought the book. He owns the book. He can read it anyway, anywhere, anytime to anybody he feels like who wants to sit there and listen. As long as he is not making money off of someone else's work, it's NOT infringement.

...you're in a war of wits with an unarmed man...head to the rear echelon and have a saspirilla with Snoopy under the wing of his Sopwith Camel...

I own over 3,000 audiobooks purchased over the last 10 years (only 47 of these are by Stephen King...go figure). The screen shot is from my goodreads.com account. The "read" designation reflects audiobooks I OWN, not borrowed books.

What if I got it into my head to reproduce them and share them with my friends?

According to the Wall Street Journal at Can You Hear Me Now? The New Explosion in Audio Books - WSJ

"These narrated books typically cost $50 or more ($100 for Stephen King's lengthy "The Stand")."

Based on this, I have conceivably paid in excess of $160,000 for these audiobooks. I'm sure I didn't spend that much. Pretty sure the most I paid for a single audiobook was $40...say an average of $25 per.

So that would be around $80,000 that I spent (be still my heart!).

With my imagined reproductions, that would be $80,000 out of the mouths of the copyright holders.

But wait! I actually have more than one friend! It costs me nothing to transfer them from one drive to another. And since they are friends...I would CHARGE THEM NOTHING. This scenario could easily run into the MILLIONS of dollars in lost revenues.

I bought the books. I own the books. As long as I'm not making money off of someone else's work...It's not infringement?!

One would think that "The Man's" personal assistant would have a better handle on copyright laws and why they were enacted.

Is there really any need to be a d**k? Lay off the snark, please.
...this all falls under "Fair Use" in Copyright law....as no profit is being made from these private use recordings, and he is not disseminating them to anyone.....so, now that you've offended everyone on the site-including our host, why don't you pack your troll trunk and go listen to an audio-book entitled "How to be an Asshat in One Easy Lesson"?....
