In my younger days I was very pro-death penalty. I'm now 48 and I've been a full-time police officer for the past sixteen years (and three months). Strangely I find that my taste for blood and vengeance has diminished as the years have gone by and I have to deal with the carnage that people can commit. I'm not necessarily anti-death penalty, but my enthusiasm for it has definitely waned. Not sure why. Maybe because I'm a little closer to my own end. Easier to be more in favor of death when one is twenty I guess. Especially other people's death. We (well at least I was) tend to be more self-righteous when we're younger.

...I'm still that way and I'm 55 old friend.....the legal system is a joke.....vengeance/justice needs meted out immediately....not strung along for years.....

I thought this movie should have beaten out American Beauty for an Oscar and I really liked American Beauty.
It didn't change my opinion on the death penalty. Grishams non fiction The Innocent Man came closer, at least made me question it more.

This is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. Tom Hanks, along with the other guard's acting is impeccable as is Michael Clarke Duncan's portrayal of John Coffey.

A fantastic book, a great movie and a wonderful cast!!

I couldn't agree more! I can't imagine a better casting decision for John Coffey. His performance was spot on. We lost him way to soon. One of my favorite King novels and film adaptations. Speaking of loosing talented people...I have this book on audio. Frank Muller did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life. He also did a great job narrating the Dark Tower series. He will also be missed.

This is a great movie. I was shocked to see that this too was a Stephen King. I never knew he could do drama too. I just knew him mostly for his horror stuff I saw.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen the movie until yesterday, I always believed I would not like it. But it was just amazing. Great actors, wonderful plot... everything is right! Though, for me it appeared to be very scary, I even closed my eyes a few times... What a cruel way to kill people. I know they are murderers, criminals, they probably deserve that... But after the movie I started to think that such criminals deserve to be imprisoned, but not to be killed. Well... The movie made me thinking, that's a good thing:)
Definitely meant to make you think about a lot of things. I think criminal justice practices are maybe the primary topic, but at least in the book there's a lot of suggestion of spiritual philosophy and meditation. Both the movie and the book changed my thoughts on capital punishment, as you mentioned. I had imagined the electric chair as a scary, but mostly humane means of execution, maybe even painless. It certainly makes you reevaluate whether "humane" execution is even possible.

Yes without a doubt one of the best movies based on King. Stand by me, Shawshank redemption and Dolores Claiburne are contenders. Perhaps Carrie and Misery
I've always felt like Hearts in Atlantis was right up there, and does anybody else think John Coffey's magic is similar to Ted Brautigan's?

This movie was very well done. I have to watch it whenever it's on cable.
I think it's well worth it to grab the blu-ray, especially if you can find the double-feature edition with The Shawshank Redemption. The special features are amazing! There's a lengthy making-of featurette with really interesting interviews--King, Peter Straub, others. Also deleted scenes that fans of the novel might want to see. And a really funny discussion of an early teaser trailer where everyone decided Mr. Jingles looked like a rat and they had to scrap it.
