The weird thing is that a number of the recent MMP releases (Christine, Dead Zone, Insomnia, etc.) have recently fallen out of stock at Amazon and B&N.com. And it looks like Simon & Schuster has started publishing new trade paperback versions using the same covers as the mass-market books. I wonder if they have given up on the mass-market format, and are shifting to trade paperbacks entirely. It seems crazy to abandon such a popular format, but I've read elsewhere that publishers are eager to switch to the higher-margin TPBs...

Maybe the out-of-stock thing is just temporary, but just try to find a new MMP copy of IT.

I'll tag Marsha and maybe she can tell you more on Monday when she is back in.

That is exactly what I am afraid of. They would have responded to Ms. Mod's request for a MMP schedule by now. They sent her the Trade schedule instead immediately, and still have not responded to her second request for MMP info. I'm pretty sure by now the MMPs are over and done with, and they switched to trade size. Which is seriously depressing. :( I'm glad I bought every one immediately as it was released. You're right. The stock is nearly gone on most of them.

I'm still waiting to get the actual titles, but the latest update I'd had from my contact at Pocket Books is that some of them will be phased out of MMP format and only be released as trade paperbacks in the future. That may eventually be the case for all of them.

See above post. I'd been waiting to get the actual list before responding to your earlier request. You would think that responses would come quicker but oftentimes these go through multiple channels and this isn't exactly one of their priorities, so it does take a while. :smile2:

It is definitely not one of their priorities. No question about it. Oh well. I felt this was what was going on in the first place, but hoped I was wrong. Thank you for getting what info you could from them. I do hope they decide to release the ones they had planned, and already designed covers for, in MMP at least.

Hi, I was looking at all the pictures you posted and in the list is Four Past Midnight. Has that actually been made into an MMP because it's one I can't seem to find anywhere. Not even a used copy. Thank you in advance for an answer.

Yes, I can verify It has been released as a Mass Market paperback. I have it in my collection and bought it the day it was released.

You may have to use eBay or Amazon Used Booksellers to get a copy at this point. Very few of those are in stock anywhere anymore, though I do see many of them on the actual shelves at B&N still.

Here is a recent article on the state of MMPs, which to me sounds like a death knell for the format. I have even noticed that almost all of the MMP sized books on the B&N shelves are being replaced with the clunky Trade sizes, so the article (sadly) seems to be true.

Is Mass Market Dying, Or Just Evolving—Again?

Yeah, I've looked on Amazon, Ebay, as well as other online and actual stores. It seems gone. That's why I asked. I guess I'll keep looking. It should turn up eventually.
And I hope MMPs don't die. If I wanted the inconvenience of a trade paperback or hardcover that's what I would use.

I prefer MMP over Trade. :(

I do for fantasy and horror novels. I collect a lot of True Crime, True Adventure, True Mountaineering, Weird Fiction and Horror anthologies, and I prefer Trade for those.

But for straight novels, there is no substitute for the MMP format.

This just maddens me to no end that they wouldn't follow through with the rest of Stephen's new cover MMPs. They released 85% like clockwork for over two years straight and then to just quit with like seven left to go that they even had covers designed for.

S&S just really pisses me off. No explanation, reason or update given on the website. Zero help from their support staff. They just flat out removed every link with the new pics and the cohesive order that once existed for all SK's new works is five months gone. If any author still moved MMPs for them, it was Steve.

I agree. I use Trade for certain books, but MMP solely for novels.

Definitely call in to a few B&N stores near you and have them check. I was at one last night and saw the new MMP of Four Past Midnight right on the shelf. They probably bought several copies of each and there is still liquid stock of most of them in the brick and mortar stores.
