Keep in mind the Pats lost to the Lions and Jags, too. They were not exactly playoff caliber teams, either. They'll probably beat the Jets and Bills, but it's not a sure-win like it used to be for the longest time. One of them at the very least could provide another upset.

I can understand why he does. Undoubtedly he tossed it in the heat of the moment. But I saw the video where he was willing to offer gloves, cleats, a jersey, and tickets to the lucky fan that has the ball. Not too bad, IMO.
