Why Salems Lot is the scariest book of Stephen King

Salem's Lot is a little like Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Pure atmospheric terror.

    Favorite King Short Story?

I've been flicking through the short story collections and gobbling up the stories that are science fiction (I'm on a sci-fi binge at the moment). I Am The Doorway and Beachworld are my favourite in this respect.

    1922

Stephen definitely puts his best foot first in FD,NS. The other stories are good but, with the exception of A Good Marriage, don't really compare to 1922. I think Big Driver could have been culled to short-story status and, well, A Fair Extension essentially IS a short story. Both of those...

    Fascinating

I am a bad Stephen King reader, and I only ever flick this book dependent on what I'm interested in. I always go back for the reviews.

What did you guys think of "Bag of Bones"?

I loved the story when it was centred on Mike. I get that Max Devore and Co. were essential to the plot/back story, but I found their characters to be caricatures and therefore not as threatening as they could have been. That said, the part where was quite scary.

    Joyland VS Doctor Sleep

Joyland. Doctor Sleep had its moments and was intriguing (not necessarily scary, aside from a few minor jolts), whereas Joyland feels more complete. It's become holiday reading for me.

    What Are You Reading?

Rereading the Harry Potter series. I started Chamber of Secrets last night, and after finishing Philosopher's Stone (I know it's called something different in the U.S) I almost get why it might have struggled to get published. Without the context of the other books, it feels incredibly empty...

    Pretty Great,huh?

I've always thought that Duma Key is somewhat underrated. I think it's the most visual of all of his works. That could be because art and colour are such important things themselves within the novel. I loved the "How to Draw a Picture" segments and the scene where is one of his best written.

    Great Book Titles

Wool by Hugh Howey - such an intriguing title, which gives way to such an intriguing novel.

    How Fast Do You Read?

Standard 400 page novel takes me about 10 hours to read. There are so many variables, though - print size, density of the writing itself etc. I only read probably 30 novels in a year and that's because some are huge and some are small. I had to think hard about this I don't usually tally or...

    Your Other Favorite Authors

Christos Tsolkias - Ever heard of the TV miniseries "The Slap"? He wrote the novel upon which it's based. Susan Hill - Loved her appropriation and continuation of "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier. Hugh Howey - Author of those post-apocalyptic novels "Wool", "Shift" and "Dust" Peter Straub -...

    What Are You Reading?

I just finished "A Kind Man" by Susan Hill. It was one of her "literary" novels, and I went into it expecting certain things (I'll leave spoilers out). It is actually a really amazing read, up there with "The Various Haunts of Men" and "In the Springtime of the Year".
