I binge watched most of this last Sunday. I still have four more episodes left but it's something else. There's been some controversy surrounding this show, some people think it glorifies suicide. Here's an article from People:
13 Reasons Why Controversy Explained

Personally, I don't think it glorifies anything, quite the opposite in fact but I can say that while I was lucky to never have been bullied and can't relate I am glad that I didn't grow up with all of this social media surrounding things. It's a tough world for teenagers these days.

Finished this show yesterday. I decided I like it. The acting is mostly good and the controversial subject matter is handled well, IMO.
Be cautioned though. Graphic rape and suicide scenes.
I thought a lot about my middle-schoolers when I watched this. I think it would be good for my older students to see. Middle school is such a difficult time for them.

I finished up the series last week. While I thought it was very well done, it still left me with such a weird feeling. My daughter will be 16 this year. She's got a lot in common with the girl in the series, and has been bullied in the past. She even went through a spell of cutting herself in middle school. You all know that I'm not one who easily cries, but at the end of this, all I could do was cry and pray to Jesus that this never happens to my child.

Y'all - I've only made it through 2 episodes, and knowing where it's heading I just don't think I can get through it. The subject is way too personal for me. I have 2 daughters - one 25 and one 13. They've both had issues with bullying, self harm, both have been in therapy. And I've had my own demons of this ilk to conquer.

Have any of you seen or read Speak?
a little different, it was minus the bullying, but the outcome is different - the girl finds her strength, she speaks, she turns the tables, the bad guy gets what he deserves. I like that she rose above being a victim. It's a story of hope and finding your strength.
.

My daughter's therapist is starting a support group this summer and she's calling it 13 Reasons Why Not. I'm excited that my girl is participating in it.

I do hope that this series shines a light on the tragedy of bullying and cliques and all the things that go on in middle school and high school. And social media - dear God - at least my generation didn't have to deal with that. The fact that you can take a photo and generate to hundreds of people instantly is horrifying. Back in my day (ha!) you'd have to buy film and flash cubes, take the photos (assuming the camera had batteries and was working properly), take the film out and drop it off at Walgreens, wait an eternity, pray that no one called your parents or the police about what you took photos of, pay for them, pick them up, order more copies from the negatives if you wanted to share them, and then pass out hard copies. Way too much trouble.

Anyhow, just my thoughts on it, so far.

I watched the whole thing. It's well structured, cleverly written and believably acted. It illustrates how little parents really know what's going on with their kids.

Me, I have little sympathy for the girl. She comes across as a selfish little drama queen, dragging everybody into her drama and blaming them for her actions. Not taking responsibility herserlf.

This was almost exactly what my daughter kept saying the entire time we were watching the series.
