25. Return Of The Living Dead (1985)

This film blends comedy and horror together so masterfully, it is hard to believe it’s from a first time director (Dan O’ Bannon). This film is a bit of a parody of “Night Of The Living Dead” but stands on its own. It’s funny, it’s gory and it can be tense as hell too. 9/10

Great movie. Awesome punk soundtrack. Love the theme song by The Cramps.

Dan O'Bannon was a co-writer on Dark Star, Alien, Heavy Metal, Blue Thunder, Total Recall and a bunch of other movies. He also did some special effects work on Star Wars.

WOO HOO! I made it to the magic 31 :) The rest will be icing on the cake-lol. The corrected list:

2014 SKMB HORRORFEST!

1) Legend of Hell House
2) The House that Dripped Blood (FTV)
3) Torture Garden--1967 Amicus anthology (FTV)
4) Dementia 13-definitely the grandaddy of the modern slasher film (FTV)
5) Smiley-urban legend-type horror film. (FTV)
6) Dracula-the Lugosi original.
7) John Carpenter's Vampires-Wow. So bad. (FTV)
8) Fright Night-1985 original. Can't say enough good about this one
9) Nightmare on Elm Street--the original
10) Vault of Horror-1972 British horror anthology. Every bit as good as Dana Jean noted! (FTV)
11) Tales From the Crypt-1971 British horror anthology. (FTV)
12) Gallery of Horror-1967 anthology. Bad, bad, bad…but hilariously so (FTV)
13) You're Next-- a standard home invasion movie (FTV)
14) Dead Within--This was a nifty little contagion movie! (FTV)
15) Return of Dracula (1958)-It's really atmospheric and creepy--a neat little vampire story.
16) Night of the Living Dead (the original)
17) Nosferatu-original. Max Schreck was very creepy, and definitely the best part of this movie.
18) Freaks-I think it qualifies because it freaked people out so very much when it was originally released
19) Shadow of the Vampire- I didn't love it, but the leads were very good. (FTV)
20) Dead of Night (1954)-I quite enjoyed it (FTV)
21) Mark of the Vampire-Tod Browning's 1935 remake of his London After Midnight. Pretty good movie! (FTV)
22) Masters of Horror-episodes 1-4. Horror anthology series that ROCKS! (FTV)
23) The Wasp Woman-I liked it when I was a kid; still fun
24) Carrie (2013) Eh. It was okay-watchable, once. (FTV)
25) The Exorcist
26) Masters of Horror-2 eps, including John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns. Horrifying and unsettling.(FTV)
27) Masters of Horror-2 eps. Homeland: dumb and overly political. Deer Woman (John Landis): creepy and very funny! (FTV)
28) Masters of Horror-2 eps. Fair-Haired Child started well, but sort of petered out at the end. Sick Girl...eh. It was okay. (FTV)
29) Horror Hotel: Autumn Gust was right--this is a nifty little chiller. (FTV)
30) Frankenstein-the James Whale original. This is a family favorite.
31) Rocky Horror Picture Show

31) Rocky Horror Picture Show :)! Hey, there's blood and everything, so it counts...right?

I saw this at a midnight screening back in the mid-90's. One of the theaters in Boston did a monthly event. Freaky!! And I'm just referring to the audience! First and only time I've seen that movie. Once was enough!

24. The Awakening (2011) -
In 1921, England is overwhelmed by the loss and grief of World War I. Hoax exposer Florence Cathcart visits a boarding school to explain sightings of a child ghost. Everything she believes unravels as the 'missing' begin to show themselves.

Are you freaking kidding me?! Why haven't seen this movie before? Very good IMO.

I've had this one in my netflix queue for ages and have never seemed to want to watch it. Now I will. Nothing like a little nudge to motivate me. ;-D

21. Village of the Damned -- 1960 -- I really love these old black and whites. And that main kid is so friggin' creepy. Love his little accent.

20. The Farm House -- 2008 -- Steven Weber is in this. Pretty disturbing premise. Dying baby involved. Unsettling.
19. The Innocents -- 1961 -- A great old standby for me. I can't NOT watch this. Perfect.
18. Big Driver -- 2014 -- Maria Bello. She did A brilliant job. She carried this story through to the end. Nicely done.
17. Let The Right One In -- 2008 -- I thought this was a very atmospheric and artistic vampire movie. And from the viewpoint of children and a focus on their friendship was brilliant.
16 -- The Revenge of Frankenstein -- 1958 -- Peter Cushing. Okay. Another one of those Frankenstein movies.
15. From a Whisper to a Scream (The Offspring) -- 1987 -- An anthology with Vincent Price and a host of other familiar character actor faces. Not bad.
14. The Strange and Deadly Occurence -- 1974 -- Robert Stack and Vera Miles. Yeah, a little bit creepy but nothing to get too excited about.
13. Nightmare In Wax -- 1969 --A familiar face in Cameron Mitchell. Reminiscent somewhat of House of Wax starring Vincent Price, this is an okay story. Changed just enough to make it different, but totally 60s cheese.
12. The Invitation --2003 -- Okay, this one is on Netflix. I understood the premise of the film. But, I'm thinking I dozed off or something. I just didn't think their secrets were that well revealed, connected and WTH? Someone watch this one and then come tell me exactly what was going on. A couple I could figure out, but a couple -- I'm still scratching my head.
11. Asylum -- 1972 -- Another in the anthology grouping. Pretty good.
10. House on Haunted Hill -- 1959 -- Vincent Price -- Old time standby movie. When that old lady comes gliding in with claws at the ready to scare that girl, man I laugh!
9. House of Evil -- 1978 -- Joanna Pettet and Richard Crenna star in this one. Not that great.
8. Creature from Black Lake -- 1976 --I have been looking for this movie for years! I couldn't remember the name nor could I remember much of the plot, but I kept googling different things -- well, I searched in youtube with different wordings and it would pull up movies and I would scan the list looking for this. And lo and behold, there it was, a still shot I recognized! I saw this when it first came out in the theaters with a friend and we were so scared! And of course, loved the pretty dark haired boy who plays one of the main characters. Rewatching it, oh man, not so great. Not horrible, but very b flicky. In checking out the two lead characters, both of them have died young. so sad. Jack Elam is in this -- such a great character actor. One of the best things about this movie is the one character's name -- Pawhoo. :smile2:
7. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors -- 1965 --This is another British anthology I like. Cushing, Donald Sutherland and familiar faces throughout.
6. Monster Club-- 1981-- not that great, but fun.
5. Vault of Horror -- 1973 -- One of my favorite of the old British groupings.
4. The House that Dripped Blood -- 1971 -- Staying true to the British anthologies. Enjoyed.
3. Torture Garden -- 1967 -- thanks for the heads up on this one skimom2 . I absolutely love old British anthology movies. I thought I'dd seen them all. Not the best in genre, but entertaining. Will be watching the house that dripped blood for tomorrow--another one I haven't seen!
2. John Dies In The End -- 2012 -- Very weird little movie.
1. The Legend of Hell House -- 1973 -- with Roddy McDowall. I don't think I need to say anything else.

24. The Haunted Strangler (FTV)
Jekyll & Hyde type tale has Boris Karloff playing a novelist researching an old murder case, not realizing the murderer is literally right under his nose the whole time. This is minor Karloff but as a huge fan it's always a treat to watch something I haven't seen before starring the master. A few racier-than-normal scenes at the local house of ill repute are of interest, and the way Karloff transforms into a whole second character without a bit of makeup is amazing and a bit funny at the same time.

3 out of 5 stars.

25. Dead End (2003) (FTV)
Dysfunctional family on their way to a Christmas dinner takes a shortcut and ends up somewhere in the Twilight Zone. Ya know, I like Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, West Side Story), and I like Lin Shane (Insidious) but this movie was a stinker. First of all, each of the characters is completely unlikeable and you really just don't want to spend 90 minutes on a car ride with them--but too bad, that's the whole movie. It never knows what kind of tone it's supposed to strike--sometimes it seems like it's trying to be funny, sometimes satirical, sometimes trying to be scary, and at its worst moments it's trying to be serious, and it fails on all accounts. Maybe the whole thing went over my head, but I just didn't get it.

1.5 out of 5 stars.

4. You Know They Got a Hell of a Band - on YouTube.
5. Dreamcatcher.

9. The Reaping with Hilary Swank - did not like this one much.
10. The Mist - it was on TV last night - ewww yuk - great special effects - very weird ending.
11. Big Driver - I would definitely classify this as horror :icon_eek:

16. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) – Daughter’s first time to see this one. This is where the movies start to get darker and more grown-up.
15. Thinner (1996) – I had honestly forgotten this one. I loved the book so much, and really wanted to like this movie. But the bad makeup for lawyer Billy (both fat and thinner) plus the fact that they picked Keri Wuhrer to be the kicka$$ gypsy Gina, made it hard to enjoy as much as I wanted to.
14. The Haunting (1963) – I had somehow missed this one until now. It was nicely done. Love the black and white movies!

13. The Lost Boys (1987) – One of my all-time faves! I wanted to be Jami Gertz, and still have a crush on Keifer! :sigh: and the movie was good and scary too!

27. State Of Emergency (2011)

A low budget zombie (technically not zombies because they are still alive so let’s just say, zombie-like) movie. There is not a lot of zombie violence and gore in this but there is plenty of tension. The movie is more character based than effects and violence based. A small group of survivors are holed up in a large warehouse waiting for help to get them out of the infected area. 7/10

26. The Crow (1994) A rock musician is brought back from the dead to avenge his and his girlfriend's murder. This movie is dark and creepy and full of action. It is also sad. Brandon Lee, the star of the film and Bruce Lee's son, was accidentally killed on the set during filming. The movie was a hit with the critics and at the box office at the time of its release and over the years it has gained a strong cult following.
