World War Z (2013) FTV Its not bad, onfact its a long way from that but remembering the fantastic book with its many points of view approach this way of of centering around Brad Pitt and his family and eliminating the other views totally simplifies the original so much that it tastes a little bad in my mouth.. Now, instead of yhe complex original story, it is a simple zombievirus outbreak movie with one hero and nothing else. 3/5

World War Z was such a terrific book, too bad it's just not suitable for film. That said, the movie has some very cool moments in it (the Jersualem sequence is so badass) and makes for a reasonably fun experience.

18. Raw (FTV)
(French/Belgian with subtitles.) Freshman female vegetarian studying to be a veterinarian suddenly develops an appetite for raw flesh after a hazing ritual. Whatever you do, don't eat while watching this movie! Every once in a while someone makes a really effective "gross-out" horror film, one that genuinely makes you uncomfortable, makes you look away from the screen, or just plain makes you feel a little bit sick for even watching it. This is such a film, but don't let that scare you away--Raw is genuinely a good horror film, well made and watchable despite how gross it can be, and at times even artful. I don't want to spoil too much about the plot because this movie works best when it keeps the viewer guessing how it's going to unfold. There are some influences here such as Gaspar Noe, known for his cinema of discomfort and depravity, and also a bit of a Peter Greenaway vibe (think "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover". But really this one is quite original, so for anyone tired of the same old same old, give Raw a chance.

4 out of 5 stars.

1.) House (1985) A underrated little horror/comedy/thriller. The only decent movie William Katt ever made! And probably the only haunted house (pseudo) comedy filmed since the 60's. Strikingly, when watched today, this was made when Vietnam veterans were still fairly young guys. Surely the 'Evil Dead' franchise owes a slight nod to this film. I love this part! An 80's music video within the movie. (edit) Richard Moll! Tall. No Puddles, but tall.

Two snaps, a twist and a kiss!

1.) House (1985)

2.) Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971)

This has of late become my favorite horror film, so it was no chore re-watching it. It was dismissed at it's release for it's brilliantly slow unfolding pace, and today by blood & gore aficionados. No "jump scares" here. Jessica was recently released from an institution, and her husband Duncan decides to leave the NY philharmonic, take her out of the city and buy a farm. Their friend Woody tags along. This was made when the services of good New York actors could be had for pennies on the dollar. And full advantage is taken here. The whole cast is a dream. And speaking of dreams -- then there's Mariclare Costello. Wow. Redheads. The bane & the delight of my existence. :icon_eek: Everything about this film is creepy. The town. The old f***ers with bandages on their arms & necks. The total lack of women in the town. Duncan's Hearse. The ferry. The weird old photograph. The pesticide tractor! Somebody stop me! The actor playing the antique dealer is a standout. A guy you've seen in fiddy movies but don't know his name. And the lead actress Zohra Lampert. She was so wonderful. She's pathetically thrilled when she sees something bizarre and other people see it too.

37.) The New Daughter (2009)

Oh man, this was a clunker. Had high hopes because Kevin Costner plays the father. He obviously just showed up for the paycheck. About halfway through, I seriously thought he cared even less about this movie than I did. So, so bad. IMDb gave it a 5.3/10 and that was extremely generous. The little boy who played the son (Gattlin Griffith) was the best actor in this film.

25. The Abominable Dr. Phibes

"A doctor, scientist, organist, and biblical scholar, Anton Phibes, seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife's death."

I love the Phibes movies and in watching it made me realize that maybe our modern day Saw took inspiration from the Phibes format. And maybe someone knows the answer to this: Did Phibes take the format from an earlier piece of art?

Using the plagues of Egypt has been done in many movies, like the one I watched previous to this, The Reaping.

But can you name something prior to Phibes where a unique death was orchestrated for each victim? Let me know if you got one I can watch. Phibes came out in 1971.

Vincent is badassical in these and they are fun! And they are available on Youtube.

22. Exorcisist: The Beginning (2004)

This was not as bad as I was expecting. The story is a bit of a mess (I read that there were a lot of production problems) but I really liked the last half hour or so.

One plus is that the movie stars Pennywise’s dad, Stellan Skarsgard. It’s not great but it’s not the total piece of trash that I was expecting either. 5/10

26. Cube 2: Hypercube -- New

"Eight strangers awaken with no memory and find themselves in a puzzling cube shaped room where the laws of physics do not always apply."

Well, well, well. Since Cube was such a confusing bit of movie magic, I decided to really jump in with both feet. After looking up Cube on wiki to help me understand what the hell, I found out that this series of movies has a cult following. Apparently they are all brainiacs and I am but a lowly bean brain. It's a horror movie about math.

But, I will say, I liked Cube 2 better. I get what they are doing a bit better, but it is so convoluted, like the Cube itself.

I guess there is a Cube Zero. I'm all in now. I can't look away, I walked into the light. Will be watching that one next.

681. Ilsa, She-Beast of the Roller Derby (1978). Dianne Thorne returns as our favorite She-wolf of the SS, somehow transported from WWII to a quasi-futuristic rollerdome battleground, where she leads a team of the toughest tarts ever to lace up their skates against Grace Jones’ team of Cruel Cruisers. Several clever sight gags, such as the ‘greek’ blades on Ilsa’s wheels, and sparkling rocket propulsion. But, like the other Ilsa flicks, this ones chock fulla bad gore fx, and grimy, full frontal nudity (and LOTS of hair). The roller derby theme gets lost halfway thru, replaced by an annoying subplot involving the export of illegal human frankfurters. Director Larsen Carr lost an eyeball during Shalimar’s pyrotechnic musical sequence.

38.) Shut In (2016)

I liked this one. Definitely a twist I didn't expect. Great cast. The fact that this got a lower rating on IMDb than The New Daughter makes me wonder who is rating the movies on that site and what they are smoking.

I think it was cat in a bag who first mentioned this film and if IRC she thought it was decent as well.

36.) The Walking Dead Season 7 (episodes 15 & 16)

Gawd I hated this season so much.

I did, but now I don't. Now it's on! Our hard little group of survivors, and us living thru them vicariously, got cocky. We & them needed a lesson. Did you see 'The Talking Dead' about the finale? I love these people! Several of whom have inexplicable British accents.

22) I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House - Not at all sure what to make of this one. It has atmosphere by the bucketload, but nothing to back it up. Lots of sizzle, one teeny, tiny, barely there morsel of steak. And the pace is...well, glacial. There's also nothing very surprising, let alone shocking about what is revealed.
Namely that the famous horror author with dementia really didn't make up her best-known work way back when, but had it kind of ghost-whispered to her.
Yet, for all that (and it really doesn't seem to have suited modern audiences; it's rated 4.7/10 on IMDB from about 5,600 votes), I didn't think it was all that bad. 2.7/5
