This is a bit tricky. I have, as they have their own lists, excluded, vampires, werewolfes and zombies but still its difficult. Here are my picks. (And please GNT, dont slaughter me for not including Koontz. PLEASE!!!)

1. IT - Stephen King (nothing to discuss really)
2. Frankenstein- Mary Shelley
3. Summer of Night - Dan Simmons
4. Broken Monsters - Lauren Beukes
5. The Ritual - Adam Nevill

Lovecraft is not here. Thats because i consider his stories as short stories, not novels, not because they are not good enough.

Stinger and Baal, both by Robert R McCammon.

Mind you, I haven't read a RM novel in decades, but he really stuck with me from when I discovered him in the 80s. Again: Hollywood, you are missing out on a gold mine here.
