I forget if it's TNT or TBS, because I get them confused, that's been playing various iterations of A Christmas Carol, movies based off the well-known Dickens story. A while back, we saw Scrooged.

But last night, they had the Patrick Stewart version. It's our favorite (even over the Mr. Magoo animated story of my youth). He's such a consummate actor, and he plays the role to the hilt and in fine fashion.

Thoroughly enjoyed this made-for-TV movie.

Completely agree. Patrick Stewart is great in this role. I heard somewhere that a few years ago he did a one man stage production of "A Christmas Carol" but I don't know if it was in the States or in in England. I'd like to see that.

I hope they play it again - I've never seen this version.

At home we always watched the version with Alistair Sim - it was sort of a family tradition.

The Alistair Sim version is my favorite. Patrick Stewart did his version here in SLC first, I think, at least that's what he said at ComiCon a couple of years ago :) A Muppet Christmas Carol is wonderful, too. We saw SCROOGE at a local community theater last night; I've never seen the Albert Finney movie, but I hope it wasn't exactly the same as their production--they tried to make Scrooge a comic figure. I was offended on Charles Dickens' behalf--lol.

I've never seen the Muppets version either - I found a picture though - is that Michael Caine?

Me too. I don't think I could watch any other one.

A Christmas Carol is a treasure of spirit and good will with which any holiday season is incomplete. Alastair Sim plays Scrooge so magnificently his performance has become the standard by which all other Scrooges are compared. It's hard to believe now that the film had such a slow start, such an uneven and unheralded journey on its way to becoming a classic. But it did become a classic and for that we can be thankful, forever and without condition. The spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come gave Scrooge the gift of redemption. The 1951 A Christmas Carol gives the gift of entertainment, laughter and joy to all of us. Everyone.

I read three Dickens books in the last year. I still haven't read A Christmas Carol, but plan to. I saw 'Scrooged' the other night and, while enjoyable, I found it quite dated. I'd have to say the Alistair Sim one is my fave as that was what was force-fed to us during the holidays in my one-horse, one-channel hometown. It eventually became likeable for me.

Yep! It's a faithful adaptation, too. Two Marleys instead of one (lol), but other than that it's the classic story :) I'm trying to find my copy of the story--I think that will be the next thing Nick and I read at bedtime before Christmas comes. I think we've already covered most of the rest of our Christmas books, aside from the tiny little kid ones.

Mine, too. I don't know if my bias is based on the fact that it was the one the ancient TV networks used always to show when I was growing up, which seems likely, or if I feel it's superior in terms of artistic quality. The version I like next is the one starring George C Scott, which is virtually the same as the Sim one, just with other actors.

Which ones have you read? My personal favorite is David Copperfield :), but I haven't read everything.
